November 11, 200817 yr comment_289143 They're very comparable in terms of power and specs on paper. But the blacktop and the gen II silvertop make thier power much smoother up top. You can tell the Gen1 and 2 motors apart from the linkage system that actuates the throttle bodies. Gen 1 has an extra lever in the system, whereas the later one is a single piece to link the throttle cable to the actuator. Cam timing is advanced slighly on the blacktop, but the best part about them is the light weight flywheel. Both motors don't run as well on our fuel without the use of an aftermarket ecu. Yeah basically what he said /\. Ive had the exact same setup on a blacktop motor and a silvertop motor. As in, same throttle bodies, ecu, flywheel, ignition, clutch, cooling system, exhaust, fuel system. Everything. They drive very similarly, with the silvertop having a slightly more satisfying time from 4500-6000rpm. The Blacktops are definately better over 6000 revs. Smoother, just happier. Put it down to the rods and lift I guess. Peak power was around 7400rpm with the blacktop, and around 7200 with the silvertop. There really isnt much difference once you use all the same kit. As for how it works in the car, Id have to say, even with a less than ideal tune, the Blacktop wanted to rev out faster and feels like it has more potential. Report

Mate can you also tell me will they bolt up to my T50, & i am running 2tg at the moment are the engine mounts mutch different. Cheers Paul. Edited November 11, 200817 yr by ausca62 Report
November 11, 200817 yr comment_289181 spirit: thats really interesting and it also matches up with other reports I hear and also dyno numbers. i would think that looking at the ports that a blacktop would leave it for dead but in practice its far from the case. I also think the 0.23 or so extra lift wouldnt do much on the induction side of things. ausca: they will bolt up but you will need an A to T50 bellhousing. Report

November 12, 200817 yr comment_289361 sure thing Paul, keep your eyes on ae86drivingclub for one of those bellhousings, the spritner drifo guys running boost should have a smashed t50 you can take a bellhousing off. Report
November 12, 200817 yr comment_289400 Everything that has been added about on the money. We have had both silvertop and blacktop on the engine dyno back to back. All of the factory tuning changes resulted in about 20hp, certainly more than we thought there would be. They are lighter internal components, cams, exhaust port shape, compression and larger throttles. The blacktop loses very little down low but it continues to make power well into the rev range. In fact the blacktop was bontinuing to make grunt at 8600rpm! We rev limited it there to keep the engine in one pice. It has npw done 6 race maeetings and is still going strong! The silvertop ended making 165hp at the flywheel and the blacktop 185hp. The only significant tuning differnce was that we had longer, larger and more loosely tapered trumpets on the blacktop. We had identical light weight billet flywheels on both engines. Report
November 12, 200817 yr comment_289460 interestingly enough the cranks weigh the same and the blacktop pistons are heavier. It does make me wonder how much of a difference the spool rods would make seeing they are significantly lighter than both the stock 20v parts. Sharpie, where they tested on an engine dyno? its quite odd to have such a varience between the two when theres only meant to be 2kw. Report
November 12, 200817 yr comment_289486 Sharpie, where they tested on an engine dyno? its quite odd to have such a varience between the two when theres only meant to be 2kw. Sharpie is my nephew and is talking about the engine in my car BT and the brothers car ST, we ran them on the same engine dyno within a day of each other same temps and humidity and we found the BT to be a lot better up high and kept making power when the st tapered off. Even the engine characteristics of the motors are completley different the bt seems more eager all over the rev range and once the revs get past 7 grand the BT hoses the ST. We raced at PI the other month and the BT would pull away easily on the main straight and get a good 5 car lengths and probably 10-15 kays quicker terminal speed before turn 1.
