ancullen Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 I too have often pondered the concept of nothingness. My whole problem has been with the concept of how the universe is meant to work. Here's what I mean: The Earth floats in space, but it is part of our Solar System. Similarly, our Solar System is part of our Galaxy, and our Galaxy is part of the Universe. I can't comprehend how the Universe can go on forever. Surely there is a boundary. But once you get to that boundary, surely there must be something outside it. How can there just be nothing? Also, the Big Bang theory (the way I've been told it), basically says that there was nothing, there was the Big Bang, and the Universe came into existence. Then what the hell was there to go bang if there was nothing??? At this point, various religious types could say that God created the Universe, either just by miracles, or by the use of the Big Bang (depending on how they think). Either way it doesn't provide any kind of solution. Let us assume that this theory is correct, that God created everything. This just creates another problem: where did God come from... Oh oh, I can here thunder in the distance and I've got a BAD feeling it's coming this way... (I wish I were kidding) Quote
Teddy Posted April 12, 2005 Author Report Posted April 12, 2005 i wonder if nothing is a black hole? take away air, take away gravity... hymmm... Quote
Xany Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 nothing can't be a black hole........cause then it would be a black hole..... "theres nothing in this box" "theres a Black hole in this box" see what i'm getting at? doesnt mean it can't be perceived as a black hole though. Quote
Teddy Posted April 13, 2005 Author Report Posted April 13, 2005 the element of how a nucular explosion works... hmmm.. i wonder what would happen if you some how reversed the process of a massive explosion, in an extreamly high vacume; inbetween 2 masssive electro magnets cancelling out eath other.. :S... I need to read up on physics and stuff and rule out alota my wackojacko thinkings. Quote
Jason Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 (edited) black holes need gravity. Its just so much of it light can not escape, making it appear black, this is the most accepted theory. If you have 'nothing' its just a void. Magnets will only affect certain things, an chemical explosions does not contain plasma(not sure about atomic bombs). You need ions for a magnet to take effect in a exposition. ie rail guns. Although you need an extremely high pulse time and energy to effect the motion of plasma. This type of equipment usually costs 10's of thousands of $$$ Edited April 13, 2005 by Jason Quote
Super Jamie Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 the big bang does not say there was nothing, then something. it says that all the matter and energy of the universe was contained in one point, and has been expanding ever since. there is alot of evidence to support this theory the problem is, we're brought up with cause and effect. light petrol on fire, you get a (relatively little) bang. so what caused the big bang? how about - time began with the big bang. There was no "before," no endless ocean of time for a god, or a physical process, to wear itself out in infinite preparation. makes sense to me a black hole is not nothing, it is matter so dense that even something travelling at the speed of light (say, light) can escape it's gravitational pull. you can look at a black hole and truly see nothing, because there's nothing to look at with your eyes. no light. you can see the effects of a black hole though, so it's definately there Quote
Medicine_Man Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 mabey the world is not all physical and perhaps more mental thought boundaries and spiritual.. Quote
Super Jamie Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 everything can be explained. do you believe in afterlife? i don't. i am of the opinion that people are a random collection of electrically-charged carbon-based atoms, and when you die, you're dead and that's it Quote
Medicine_Man Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 energy can't be created nor destroyed, only change forms.. Quote
