Hi guys,

my 5k has suffered a failed lifter... i want to replace all 8 of them but without the hassle of changing to a solid lifter setup.

can't anyone tell me where i can get a set in a hurry? the repco store thats local to me says no one has any in the country...

If anyone can help that would be awesome as.

Oh and for whats its worth I'm in the northside of brisbane.

i reed somewhere you can use holden 202 lifters and datsome 1200 push rods. but please don't hold me to that 100% it was a while ago i saw it.

try your local genuine toyota parts dealer i no we can get them here in NZ for about $19each brand new

^^ that would be solid lifters mate, he's looking for hydraulic.

Have you tryed one of your local engine re-building/performance shops?

i firgue if ALL of repcos suppliers don't have em then a engine rebuilder (who would likely get his bits from repco anyways) probably wouldnt either...

currently weighing up my options for the conversion...

now i know a solid cam will wreck hydraulic lifters... but will my hydraulic cam wreck my solid lifters if i change?

considering the possibility that my cam is to suit solid lifters hence the lifter or two being stuffed :D

i didnt build this motor so i wouldnt know tho. short of removing the cam i guess i wont know, and thats a lot more wok than i really wanna bother with.

How exactly did it fail? You sure it didn't just gum up with crud, or bust a circlip? Or did it seize?

I wouldn't be using either combination, although some people have used hydraulic cams with solid lifters.

As for sourcing them, Repco are not the be all end all of parts suppliers, try Bursons or Coventrys/Motor traders and most certainly try a couple of engin builders.

Rather than certain lifters vs certain cams, I'll put my money on the fact that the lifters where not machined properly when the engine was assembled.

Don't be suprised if you've got knackered cam lobes now too!!!

I'd look into Chev/Holden hydraulic lifters, as a substitute for the 5k hydraulics. The anti-pump up ones would probably work well in a motor built to rev.

I'd install a fresh cam with whatever new lifters you go with.

hrmm been doing some talking to a local engine builder and hes echoed you lots suggestions.

going to do it all once and properly. out comes the 5k, in goes the 4k (:P ) amd will farm the build out a bit.

can anyone suggest someone good in the brisbane (prefer northside but will make the trek if someone on the southside has a rep for k motors) area that will make this bad boy sing??

It already has brand new everything and flat top pistons and a reco head but was assembled by previous owner, after the failed lifter and lack of any real thought put into a lot of the rest of the motor/car id like the lot at least pulled down and looked at by a pro.

the work i want done is:

new everything, any suggestions on what brands of bearings and gaskets? wouls like a thin as metal one if ACL or the like do one.

source and install camshaft (any suggestions on size guys i want big and lumpy)

source and install 202 solid lifters, a12 pushrods and 3k rocker gear (unless theres a alternative combo i havent read of that works better)

maybe bigger valves if you guys think its worth it?

balance and blueprint bottom end so it revs like a c**t

source and install electronic dizzy and MSD

might need someone to retune my weber to suit too if anyone knows a good carby dyno guy???

would it be worth going new higher comp pistons (maybe oversize for a little more capacity?) like i said has flat tops in it already...

cheers for any advice you guys can give...

Luke.

any ideas what sort of money id be looking at for all of the above?

My 5k was:

40 thou over

new slugs

dipped and all new bearings (including cam)

balanced

Full head rebuilt (not ported)

Complete VRS kit

1300 bucks. I bolted everything together, with the exception of the conrods already on the pistons.

Cam I got off here for 150 bucks with hydraulic lifters, rods and a 5 speed. Uncertain on the profile, but you can get them ground cheap.

70 bucks for an elec dizzy off here

If you want a Capacative Discharge ignition (MSD) then don't get the MSD 6al. Get the Crane Hi6, its digital rather than analogue and it has a built in rev limiter, unlike the MSD which uses the stupid pill modules. PLUS its much cheaper.

cheers for your advice philbey, ive always had MSD's cause i seem to come across them cheap for some reason. will look into a crane jobbie though.

also been looking into the jaycar DIY CDI kit, anyone have any input into what they are like?

I've also looked at the Jaycar kit, but finding good, solid "user results" on them is proving to be difficult.

I like the idea of a simple, 2D ignition curve, but I just can't seem to find anyones detailed experiences using them. To me it's a much nicer solution than regraphing a dizzy, but I want to know how reliable they are before I try learn to solder.

One of those with a Hi6/6AL and a locked dizzy would be very handy. Plus added knock sensor ability, and you could plumb in a MAP sensor for engine load.
