With this in mind, I would go 4agze. Would probably be easier than the 20v conversion, and the 4agze is more powerful. Also the 4agze would be a lot easier than the more custom 4agte. Perhaps go 4agze, then look into going 4agte once you have done the swap and gotten a better understanding of your car.

So the hunt begins for a nice clean, lightly modded (i possble), low km's 4AGZE I'm pumped :jamie:

I'm currently building a 4agze to put into my 86, keeping the sc12 but I'll be running about 13 psi. First thing you gotta remember is you need a new box, which easily ads up to 800$ on the cost of the build. I went with the gze because i like the idea of a supercharged 1600cc engine and while most people take them off and just go turbo, I like the idea of instant torque and no need to rev it to 11ty billion RPM for peak power. I'll probably put up a build thread later on.

If you're not going to build a motor up from scratch then your best option is to: -

 

1. Buy late model 4agze

2. Remove SC12

3. Purchase RWD intake or mod FWD one.

3. Install turbo manifold & t28

4. Install motor/piping etc & tune aftermarket ECU

5. ???

6. Profit

Whoa...reading all this reminds me of the thought process i had when i purchased an ae82 hatch with a sick engine. A rebuilt stock 4AGE went in to get her going & the old is being rebuilt as a 4AGTE. Lower cost,the work is easier (for myself at any rate) parts are easy to find...all things that got me to take this road. Aiming for about 220hp @ wheels (yes the front ones!) at which point busting boxes and/or driveshafts may be an issue but rebuild that bridge when i get to it ;-) For the power i was chasing & a daily driver being a requirement meant that it needs the good bits in the right places & so far my estimated costs mean that its going to be a longish build. Oh well,brakes will keep me busy.

Definitely a good choice. It would probably get a bit hektik trying to turn your 4agze into a 4agte if you're only learning.

Just an engine conversion is good enough. Once you understand them a bit more you can move onto bigger (and hopefully)

better things!

just a note... you can actaully use the stock 4AGZE ECU with a turbo instead of the supercharger.... its not ideal, but it does work. Of course you are boost limited to 14-15psi before fuel cut.

 

Always handy to know, as it allows you to nicely "stage" each step of a 4A-GTE build;

Stage 1 - fit stock 4AGZE with T50 box

Stage 2 - upgrade box to W55/W58

Stage 3 - replace supercharger with turbo

Stage 4 - replace ECU with a microtech or similar programmable ECU.

Stage 5 - ???

Stage 6 - skids
