Zoidburg Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Hi guys, Anyone know where to get a 7K motor with K50 gearbox in SA? I intend to install one in my KE-30 coupe, which currently only has the little 3K with 4 spd. A name of any wrecker or engine place around Adelaide would be very helpful! Thank you Quote
anastasios Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 (edited) hm i think its going to be very hard to find a ke55 5speed and a 7k at a wrecker, you could work the 3k? Edited October 24, 2009 by anastasios Quote
Zoidburg Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 Hmmm, Trouble is sitting on highway speeds is a little demanding for the 4 spd 3K engine. I travel long distances often so a 5 spd and a little more grunt would be ideal. The 3K only has extractors, domed sports airfilter and performance coil. Is otherwise standard. There must be somewhere to source a 7K motor and gearbox!! Not sure it's really worth working the 3K. Quote
Zoidburg Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 What would help make the 3K sit better on the highway? I hear about people putting lumpier cams and bigger pistons in them, but I don't know where to source them from. Perhaps even a higher ratio diff would help? Do you know where to get performance parts for the 3K? Quote
TOM Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Last time I went to Just Wrecking Toyota's (Wingfield) they said they could still get import 4K's, 5K's and 7K's - just ring them or go down there and ask. For a cheaper option, get a second hand 4K for sub $200, a 5-speed and go from there - bullet-proof reliable, rev happy, capable of producing good fun power, sit on 110 km/h all day, etc neat car btw, dunno about the wheels though Quote
anastasios Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 id start with getting a 5 spd gear box Quote
Zoidburg Posted October 24, 2009 Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 Thanks for that, will have to give them a call. Yes she's a fairly tidy old girl, mate you should have seen what she looked like before! Picked her up for $500, was orange, rusted and every panel was dented, front and back smashed in... you name it! Been fixing her up slowly over the last couple of years. I'm a Uni student so money is always in short supply! For now was considering changing the diff centre to a higher ratio. Just need something to relax the revs a bit whilst sitting on 110km/h. But you're right, the little K motors are bullet-proof. Have never had any trouble with it. Hehe, yeah the wheels are just standard 15's off a Corona I think. I quite like them, just need to get low profiles on there. Cheers Quote
Evan G Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 shouldnt you get a lower ratio centre? lowers the tailshaft speed? therefor less rpm? Quote
rob83ke70 Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 not a very nice ending to all this. If you put a taller diff (higher gearing) in the car, it will be really slow to take off and won't accellerate really well, but if you put a shorter diff (lower gearing) in the car it will take off better but will rev higher when driving on the highway. If you work the 3k or 4k then it will want to rev higher than stock, and will LOVE the shorter diff. I'd reccommend a quiet(ish) exhaust should you go down this path. The ke55 we run does 4000rpm approx when on the highway with a 4speed box doing 100-110km/hr... not overly nice, but it takes off plenty fast down low, which is what we want it to do. You need to combine a close on stock larger capacity engine with a taller diff to bring the revs down. I wasn't keen on a 7k myself (can't bring myself to play with a 5k yet) because it seems to "van-like" for the corolla... Maybe a 4af or 2tc with taller gears?? why can't someone go all out and put a 2gr-fe out of an aurion (200kw) into their rwd ke corolla??? now THAT would be a nice highway car :S Robert. Quote
Zoidburg Posted October 25, 2009 Author Report Posted October 25, 2009 Yeah it gets a little confusing! I'm pretty sure the numbers of a taller diff are lower (eg 4:1 to a 3:1), but they are termed as a higher ratio diff. Even only a couple hundred RPM would make a huge difference. Will try changing the diff centre and see what happens. I will loose take off, but then again it'll be able to stay in gear for longer, which will probably make up for it. It's theoretically a balancing act, but for my purposes I think taller gears is the way to go. I always found my gears ran out too early anyway! Should probably work the 3K a little more too. Either way this works out loads cheaper than a new engine and gearbox! Thanks Quote
Zoidburg Posted October 25, 2009 Author Report Posted October 25, 2009 Maybe a twin carby set up will help? Anyone selling the manifold for one? Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Have a look in the parts trading section. You should be able to find a 7K in a commercial wreckers somewhere. Expect to pay about $1k for it though. :S Quote

Taz_Rx Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 5k - 1.6L?7K - 1.8L? 5k = 1.5l Yes 7k = 1.8l Quote
LukeAE71 Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Start with a 5 speed as it is cheap and easy to do. I have a 5 speed in my KE11 with 3K and it comfortably sits on 110 km/h with more left in it  I wouldn't know the revs though as there is no tacho. Quote
