Just bought an RA40 celica and looking to give it a few mods to give it a bit more bite.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

18R-G

18r-g will bolt in, but:-

1. you will have to shorten the throttle linkage. some ra40s like my old 79 coupe will have the threaded holes in the new location on the driver's side of the firewall if you are lucky.

2. wire from distributer to coil for points will have to be extended bout 200mm to reach the new dizzy position.

3. same goes for oil pressure sender wire.

4. obviously exhaust manifolds are different so get a set of headers to run into a 2.5in system.

5. most importantly, DO NOT bolt a twin cam head onto a single cam block UNLESS you change the oil pump for a high volume unit. you WILL be replacing bent valves, cracked timing case and mashed up timing chain when high revs and lower oil pressure will cause the chain tensioner to allow the timing chain to jump off the cam sprockets if you don't. high volume pump is physically taller than standard.

other than that the g is a great old engine. there is nothing you can do to an 18r that will bring it close to the g.

if you get a g, advance the inlet cam 1 tooth, install a 16r dizzy with bout 20deg base timing and put on a pair of 40mm webbers.

no mod plate needed cos it's a factory option. if you keep your 18r bottom end then don't even need to change rego details.

gl with it

p.s. save your coin and go 1uz

Leave the airfilter on, thats laughably stupid. :hmm:

Put some full height or correctly wound lowering springs in it. :D  :hmm: :bash:

You can fit an AE86 LSD, not a cheap mod, however. :y:

22re conversion would be reasonably straightforward I think, if you can manage the wiring.

Cheap mods tend to devalue and destroy a car. Worth saving your pennies and doing good stuff. A set of shocks worth around a grand will make it handle far superior to cutties and full length shocks, but not easy on the wallet. Theres a way to lower a car, and theres a way not to.

I suggest you start with basic maintenance. Check all the tie rod ends, and linkages in the steering. Rebush the suspension with nolathane. Start with the ones thet need replacing right way, and do the lot if you are keen. Maybe 150 bucks in this if you go basic, closer to 300 if you do a lot of bushes and need tie rod ends as well.

You could fit ae86 power steering arms to get more lock, I guess. It would be a waste of time if the steering system was flogged out. Thats about a 200 dollar exercise.

Some wheels around 15 inch diameter, and 7 to 8 inches wide would make it feel far better on the road, as long as there is good rubber. Probably cost you 500- 700 to get somehting decent.

Fit a swaybar to the rear end. Simply a matter of finding a swaybar that suits and welding a mount onto the diff and the body. Make it feel less floaty and more direct. May as well do the swaybar upgrade on the front end too. Thats about 300-400 dollars probably.
