That would be the front end of the gasket. They have block out holes at the front and bigger holes at the back to try and promote coolant flow through the back of the head. Otherwise the water flow will just take the easiest path at the front and straight out the thermostat.

cheers man. there are still holes blanked out at the back of the head though and one of them has blown through could this be why my coolant and oil are mixing there is no cracks in the head and this is the only thing i can find wrong with the gasket

sure the head isnt warped?

best of taking the head down to a engine shop and getting it pressure tested and checked for straightness.

i too noticed the weirdness of the 4kc headgasket when i changed it on a mates car.

..and the water hole would never blank over an oil hole.

You have a problem somewhere else, either warpage around the oil pressure hole, or a nasty crack somewhere inside itto get oil in the radiator. If its water in the sump then any warps in the middle will let water drain back into the sump.

Can I also suggest that when you get a new head gasket to spend the $80 odd on a genuine toyota one. You'll be able to see how much better they are than generic re-pro ones.
