4k's come factory with double row timing chains

Bullshit. Pretty much all 4k's came from the factory with a single row timing chain. Think about it the motors are like 30 years old, most would have had a timing chain replaced in there lifetime, single and double row kits are freely available in the aftermarket... For the amount of effort required to replace a timing chain, most people opt to put a double row in to save the headf@$k of having to do it again in a few years.

3k's had a double row timing chain std.

If you are only going to rev it to 7 grand, there is no point replacing the valve springs or spending a heap on porting, or on bigger valves.

Pistons and rods don't make HP, they support it.

yes i know they do not make hp they make it easier on the motor yea i didnt think they had it stock I'm goin a pre big cam so i will need valve springs hence the double row timing chain I'm porting the head myself ...my dads a engine builder and i think ill leave stock size valves in

Great point.

If you are wanting to increase power output, the biggest gains that can be made are in the top end.

Spend a bit of time and $ improving the ports and flow.

rather than being stupid and making another thread, what upgrades are need to put a better cam into a 5k?

None if you stay hydraulic, and don't worry about a solid lifter conversion (which really gives minimal gains unless you plan on spending a lot of time over 8 grand).

hey mitch. I'm running the mahle pistons in mine, you can go up to 60 thou oversize. They're about 160 a set. I'd forget rods, you probably don't need them and as felix said they don't make power.

if you are pulling the bottom end apart, get it balanced.

Porting yourself, sounds cool, post up plenty of pics! Probably a 3 angle valve grind will do, I know in a 5K you can't really get much bigger in valve size without serious work, dunno about a 4K.

Double row, as felix mentioned, is a maintenance thing, they last longer than single row chains.

Abbott, you should look at a bigger (than stock) carby and a set of extractors as a bare minimum. I ran a big lift cam (.480 lift) with stock springs, I got a year out of them before they broke, but I'd suggest a set of performance springs.

If you want to try and extract some extra power from the bottom end balance the hell out of everything like Philbey said.

Spool are now making 5k H beam rods for $595 a set. Don't see why you couldn't use them in a 5k.

BIG cam and <7000rpm doesn't really add up. :)

Oh and forget the 180 holley, there's so much better options out there!
