after inspection i found a brand new head gasket and a minor surface crack in my head, but the crack had the appearance of one that had been there for years. the mechanic at API engines lonsdale agreed.

 

it looks like the previous owner has obviously had troubles with the crack before then just put on a brand new head gasket to buy him 3 months or so and sold it to me under the impression the car was gold.

 

The head has been welded and shaved by API engines, ive bought a new water pump (because the old one was going to give out soon), and new gaskets for everything. Ive also painted my head, rocker cover, and water pump in anodized red and am doing my pulleys in anodized blue later on.

 

 

so now I'm at the point where i reasemble my engine. I have a torque wrench but i don't know what tension the head bolts have to be for a 5k help?

 

Ps. one good thing that came from all this, is that i realized my head has been ported!

66nm for the 4k head

you don't know the 5K? or is it universal between the k motors?

As you will be putting a new Head gasket on, it should state the correct torque and procedure on the packaging.

nope, i couldnt order toyota genuine where i am, so i got an aftermarket one.

Strange. I have never used a Toyota Genuine one, and the one's I have used have without exception always had the torque info on them.

i think the 4k would be the same torque,

 

make sure you torque them in sequence

The reason I say the above is because Monotorque gaskets used to have a different torque to factory.

i rang API and they gave me the specs, whats the sequence? start in the middle and work your way out?

 

are you gonna retorque them after a few thousand km?

Don't use the actual 5k head bolts, use some 3k or 4k ones. I can't remember the exact reason but the 5k ones are similar to 'torque to yeild' bolts and the threads can stretch. 3/4k ones don't.

 

I find it a bit hard to believe you can't get a genuine 5k gasket through Toyota. Did you ask for a KM36 liteace HG or were you asking them for a '5k head gasket for a corolla'? If you said corolla thats where they may have got confused. We actually have a member here who works in a Toyota parts department in my home city. I'll PM you his username. Maybe try sending him a message and ask for the part number (as I know he knows what they are - He ordered me one 18 months ago) then contact your local Toyota parts department and tell them you want a P/N XXXXX. ;)

 

And like I've told you before, if you want to boost this motor I would also recommend sourcing some ARP head studs for piece of mind. ;)

somewhat offtopic, but when i did my 4age hadgasket the packaging had a torque spec (50-100-150nm...or something, 3 stages) but the 4age manual specifies a certain torque and then a certain spinning of the bolt.

 

ie torque to 100nm, and then turn 90 degrees.

 

i just went with the toyota manual specs i think. still going after 1yr, so must have been alright....

Dave, any spec's that has degrees in it (relating to bolts), the bolts are yield strength, which means they are suppose to be one use only!!

 

Didn't think 4age's had yield strength bolts, mmm, interesting!!!

Yeah they do have torque to yeild bolts TRD. Mate of mine was putting a new head gasket on a 4AGE once and was asking me about the "torque to XXnm, then add another 1/4 turn".

 

....however APR kits for 4A's are pretty easily attainable. ;)
