if its been rebuilt id say it was just cleaned out for when it was put back together.. as far as cleaning it out id say degreaser wouldnt be a good idea.. because next time you put oil in you'll get little bits of degreaser in your oil :D wouldnt know without seeing it though.

SOUNDS VERY DODGY TO ME!!!!!

So it has a "suspected" leaking head gasket. And the tappet cover has been obviously degreased AFTER its been running after the rebuild.

This says to me that the seller is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Chances are the tappet cover was degreased cause of the mayonaise (well blown HG) that was in it.

yeah thats what i was thinking too but i wasn't completely sure if there was oil in there but i had a look in the coolant top out let and i couldn't see any of the milky substance just coolant mark's or in the sump oil and it didn't have any traces of it. thanks taz, dropz and jono c for the help

Because of the pressure differences its more common to get water in the oil (and cause mayo) than oil in the water.

Undo the sump plug and see what comes out first, oil or water. As the oil will sit on top of the water in the sump, if there's any water in the sump it'll drain out first. Last time I blew a HG I drained about a litre of water from the sump before I even saw any oil!!!

I read somewhere that you have to number the push rod's so you don't get them confused but i think that was on an 8 so i did it anyways to make sure.
