xmoht Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 hi alli have a ke with a 20v in it which is stock I'm looking for more power what would be the best way to make more power without turbo option computer etc etc? Aside from all the usual things to get more power, cam grinds, extractors, exhaust size etc. you could put the block from a 7AFE on it. That makes it 1.8 liter and should give it quite a bit more poke. 7AFE's are quite cheap too so shouldn't be hard to find. Quote
flamingheads Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 I thought bolt ons with a computer were the best power upgrade to start with. Quote
brendan Posted August 8, 2010 Author Report Posted August 8, 2010 yeah might start with a comp but just choosing the right one is the confusing part Quote
seabiscuit Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Ask a tuner what ECU's they like working with. Quote
brendan Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 yeah thats what i mightg doo cheers for that advice Quote
HayzTawil Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 hey mate i have the same project just got it on the road i have custom extactors 2inch exhaust autronics ecu on the dyno it made 90kw atw awsome power, i raced my mates VL turbo i was ahead in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear, next thing i might do is lighten the fly wheel and bolt on black top throttles as the are a few mm bigger. eventually i will be doing a turbo set up aiming to get about 200 to 250 atw. LittleRedSpirit Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Blacktop throttles will hurt the power unless you go searching for it with cams. I would prescribe 4-2-1 with the correct port crossover, with large diameter and long primarys, a good quality metal cat, merge collector, Mandrel exhaust in stainless steel or titanium, 1mm oversize valves, delete vvt, 300+duration and as close to 10mm lift as you can get. Better to start with a blacktop head unless you plan to extensively port the silvertop inlets to match the blacktop throttles. Get some variable length trumpests happening in a custom box too. Better dry sump it while youre at it. They are an expensive motor to modify. You can tune them with exhaust and different trumpets. An aftermarket ecu will help you find gains once you start getting away from 'standard' equipment. Cost you around 1500 minimum to get some camshafts for it, and have the head re shimmed to suit. Most likely more in the end with a new hg and the other work you will end up doing. don't go past about 272 from memory or you will have to delete the vvt. It just means changing cam pulleys and blocking an oil gallery I think. Quote
altezzaclub Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 ..but it will have more torque and be a lot more driveable if you turbo it! Sadly, building a race car motor will probably cost you more than a simple turbo setup and be more difficult to drive around town. You will probably get a better motor with more torque by running a 7psi turbo with bigger injectors & a computer. Quote
HayzTawil Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 yeah was looking at changing the cams aswell, so what your saying is to get a bt head instead of just the bt throttles? why do u need to get rid of the vvt if over 272kw unless i misunderstood? i most likely will be turboing it what needs to be done to internals other than valve springs? with the trumpets, do they have to be inside a airbox? ive spent alot on this motor already so i wanna do it right all the way. thanks for the input guys!! HayzTawil Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 also whats the best trumpets to use? or are they the same? Quote
seabiscuit Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 also whats the best trumpets to use? or are they the same? The difference in trumpets is the length and width of them. Research what the differences is between wide/skinny and long/short and how it affects the engine and you should be able to make your decision based on that. A good source of information to learn about the 4A-GE engine is Bill Sherwood's 4AGE page. Google it and you/ll come up with a GOLD MINE of 4A-GE information. All the best with your build. Quote
