Yo.. Just wondered how you guys usually go on about removing the starter? Do you remove it from the top or the bottom? Do you remove anything else? I have a left hooker so the intake, carb, intake mani and exhaust mani sits on the engine, the brake booster and pedal box sits on the firewall and it makes it really cramped in there :D

pretty easy job, but can be a pain getting it back in again, when i did it went like this.

 

-isolate starter motor from battrey by undoing main battery positive (easier than undoing positive terminal off starter)

-undo 2 bolts that hold starter in, from memory these are from the bellhousing side, so you will need a spanner and a bit of patience, don't think you can fit a socket down there. they will be the smaller of the bolts on the bellhousing

-remove starter from location!

-remove wires from starter

-remove starter from car.

 

putting it back in can be a little tricky, trying to line up the bolt holes etc, but its not so bad.

Best to do put it back in with someone else there, to line the bolts up alot easier. Don't know about ke70's but on my 35 i used extension bars and a univerisal joint to get to the mounting bolts in and out, was about 2 feet long but work. Again easier if you have someone to locate the socket on the nuts you wanna undo.

...and it shows how bad Toyota can be as design engineers! Why tilt the motor that way? Why not the other way? or why put the manifolds on the underneath instead of the top? or why put the starter under the manifolds instead of on top of the motor... Many other manufacterers have tilted motors with better layouts.

 

Anyway Eric, I'm afraid all you can do is fight with it from top and bottom. When I had the motor out I reassembled it with the manifolds on before I put it back in because I knew it was hard to get at bolts under there, only to have a fusible link break just by the starter after a week of use. So I had the same hassle as you, but not as bad with it being RHD. One bolt I got by lying under the car, one with a long socket from the top. The motor I dropped downwards to undo the wiring.

hahaha c'mon altezza ease up:P though i don't understanding the slanting engine, what on earth is the advantage! easy to change spark plugs perhaps?

 

obviosly the people who were in charge of designing all the stuff on the OTHER side of the motor, were slack, in that they left EVERYTHING to the guys designing the passenger side of the engine. and to add insult to injury they slanted it over that way as well!

 

haha eric its not as bad as it may seem, i changed one in 20mins, yes its a pain, but if things were easy they would be boring!

I've got the started removed from the bellhousing, my only problem is that it's so tight around there that I can't physically get the starter out of the bay! Do you need to drop the subframe/engine in order to get the starter out? Or do you perhaps remove the exhaust? Did you guys get it out from the top or the bottom?

nah i didnt have to remove anything else.

 

is your car Left hand drive? ie do you have the steering column in the way?

 

i think from memory i mananged to monouver it out the bottom.

Yeah it hits the steering column joint when trying to get it out from the back :D

From the sounds of this i would be sending it to the scrap yard, it's annoying enough on a rhd car let alone a lhd car, when i pull the starter motor outta my car i pull the exhaust off aswell, may i suggest to help you out on your predicament you pull your steering colomn off the car then the exhaust then you should technically have heaps of room

If its a nippon starter should pop out with some jiggling.

If its a bosch you will need to drop the exhaust.
