My apologies if this has been asked millions of times before...

 

I noticed my KE-30 running a 5K has recently developed some exhaust leaks around where the pipe is welded up to the extractors. The idle on the 5K has also started fluctuating slightly. Could the two be related?

 

Since I've not mucked with the tuning much, I think maybe the exhaust leaks could be upsetting it?

maybe.... but I'd get a mirror, an LED torch and :sigh: lie underneath and look at the bottom of the exhaust manifold where it joins the head.

 

A dog of a thing to see, but if the exhaust manifold is under stress enough to crack at the pipe, it may have opened up a leak at the manifold gasket. A little inlet leak there would certainly affect your idle. Any black soot around the gasket is a dead giveaway.

 

If that is clean and the nuts are all up tight then you'll have to fix the exhaust leaks and see.

While Idling spray the manfold with brake cleaner, from the top and below.

If it stalls you have a inlet leak.

Are you using an extractor gaskit ?

just fixed a similar problem on my car, replaced the manifold gasket and just like that its running smoother and idles quiet as.

all for the massive cost of $10.80 :yes:

really cheap but gasket for extractors might be more.

An extractor gasket is an all metal one right?

 

No I'm just using a standard gasket on it, but there does'nt appear to be any leaks from the manifold (no black suit visible). I did have a leak there once before and it was audible right away, sounded like a tractor!

 

Think I'll have to get the exhaust welded up a bit where it joins the extractors. There's lots of little black dots there, which should indicate a leak. As it's not far from the manifold, it may be upsetting it slightly. It's only a slight deviation from the regular idle smoothness, but I'm fussy!

hey there Just today my ke35 with a stock 4k in it started to do the same thing it is like someone is lightly blipping the accelerator and it was stalling.

but i turned the idle up so it wouldnt but still very up and down.

 

I drove it on the freeway and when i got off and now the exhaust sounds like a tractor so I'm guessing a gasket or something was on its way out and it messed with my fuel mixture and now its finnally gone do you think this leak is the problem? cheers

Yeah that sounds like a manifold gasket for sure.

 

The same thing happened to me a while back, I changed the manifold gasket and the sound was gone. Problem for me was one of my extractor pipes had slightly less meat on it than the others, so I had to fit a bigger washer to the manifold bolt to hold it down properly. After you change it go for a good drive, then once the motor cools down re-tension the manifold bolts.

I reckon the one-piece gasket is better than the two-piece system-

Use the above or double up with two gaskets sandwiched together with a little silicon between them. Another trick is to run a bead of silicon around the openings and let it go off a little, so it forms a skin on the surface. This helps if there is any uneven surfaces.

 

Also, check the alignment of the extractor ports to the gasket. Had a 202 ant the extractors and the gasket were way out. Some only had 2mm of gasket that was actually being compressed between the head and the extractors if you get what I mean. Used to fail all of the time, the worst after 5min of driving. Ended up having to cut the gasket into 6 pieces and aligning them to each port. Ended up replacing those extractors.
