Are you referring to the grade (viscosity) of oil or brand name (manufacturer) of oil?

Brands seem to be a personal thing, the grade of oil recommended by your cars manual should be the grade to use as far as I know. Unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances.

For old engines I can't go past Penrite 30/70 for old engines, stops the oil from burning.

Had a 4k which blew a little bit of smoke in the higher rpm and as soon as I used that it stopped.

I see too many people using 10/25 on old engines these days, simply just drains out of the head too fast

and inhibits premature wear. The thicker stuff stays up there better.

CRANKCASE

CASTROL MAGNATEC

Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 provides up to 5 times* better protection than other leading engine oils. Up to 75% of engine wear happens while your engine is warming up. Castrol Magnatec combines synthetic technology with intelligent molecules that cling like a magnet to critical engine parts, to form an extra layer of protection. Castrol Magnatec molecules cling to the engine, to create a thin film of protection, dramatically reducing engine wear during the critical start-up/warm up period to ensure your engine is protected from the moment you turn the key. Meets and exceeds API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3 requirements. *Tested against part-synthetic engine oils using the severe Sequence IVA wear test.

or CASTROL GTX MODERN ENGINE 15W-40

or CASTROL GTX 20W-50

Edit: this is quoted from the Castrol lube guide, for the 4K engine

Iv'e used Castrol Magnatec (Really good for the 16v/20v 4AGE) and Panrite wins hands down for the 4k/5k.

There is simply no need to go for sutch thin oil, like I said the thin stuff just drains back out of the head and hey presto worn valve guides.

Good for high revving motors but not for our sluggish k motors.

If you are not racing then seriously consider 30w70, I am not joking you will notice and hear the difference.

If you decide to go with Castrol then I would advise on GTX 20w50.

yeah definitely not racing or doing any hooner garbage in my fwd, just something that'll keep the reliable as ever engine rolling, i think i'll pick some castrol magnatec up do they make a 30w70 or do you just recommend the 20w50 over it?

My 4A has a "Toyota recommends Castrol" sticker on the rocker cover. So Castrol 20w50 it is for mine.

Lol that's just called marketing. Every company claims to be the best. So it is up to the user to define what is better for himself.

In my moderately worked 5k, i'm using Penrite 20w60...

+1 for Penrite! (30w70)

:y: Amen to that! It's when I was reading a factory manual for the car & in the photos there they're using Castrol oil that I realised if the mechanics who serviced them used it, it can't be all that bad. Admittedly Magnatec wasnt created back then, but you catch my drift
