butler Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) was wondering whats the shortest diff i will find as far as stock rolla items. and would most models bolt straight up into a ke36 pano? Edited September 12, 2011 by butler Quote
parrot Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Well Ke1x will be shortest, but you also need to factor in location of spring hangers and so on. Quote
towe001 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 KE10 might be the shortest. When it comes to the KE3x and KE5x There's about three different tailshafts and it'll depend on what transmission and diff the car is running. The jap diff has a different input flange to the BW. Manuals and the two speed auto have the same output shaft. And the three speed trimatic has a different output shaft. I'm not overly sure about the KE70 Quote
butler Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) well, the plan is to brace the diff. add a mini spool+billet axles and run it behind a 383 stroker. I'm in the process of tubbing my car and was thinking about chucking in a stock welded diff to see how long until i can detonate the axles. plus atm its on a dolly and can't get to the paintshop. does the ke10 diff physically mount to the car the same? Why waste the time and effort in a diff that you know wont last 5 minutes behind that sort of engine. Start looking at a hilux or even an early skyline diff. Shave it. shorten it, get the spring and shocky mounts off your diff and have them welded on along with tramp bars. At least then you'll have 5 wheel studs and you won't shear your wheels off. butler Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) i figured billet axles and a spool would be able to cope. ive never done anything to a corolla before, usually its a commonwhore which makes it easy. plus ive never worked with leaf springs. also, the car has no diff in it what so ever, I'm in the process of trying to tub the car and I'm trying to figure out how to move the chassis. butler Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 Post what pics? One cut out inner guard? Its pretty clear I've never tackled anything of this magnitude. That's why I'm asking questions Quote
GJM85 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 You may need to do more research. Something along the lines of structural engineering, geometry and welding. Quote
butler Posted September 12, 2011 Author Report Posted September 12, 2011 I know this, I've got 2 boilermakers on hand to help with the majority of it. I did a general engineers course several years ago so I know I can weld. Its just a matter of following directions properly. Its not something that's happening overnight, nor do I plan on rushing anything. I've been looking into minitrucks and how they set up their rears. I've got a rolla diff coming for free hence the questions, I wasn't sure if a mini spool+billet axles would be enough to handle 400max hp. Quote
Jordain Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Go get a Hilux diff shortened or a 9inch! KE10 diff centre is the size of your fist Quote
butler Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 yeah i keep reading about hilux diffs, seems the go. which particular model is it that is the commonly used diff? i was thinking about using a old tonner diff. Quote
towe001 Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 I think its about the RN25 thats runs a similar sized track to a KE3x/55. But the later model diffs are stronger. From memory look at the 4wd diffs, their stronger then the 2wd versions and plus you'll have the option of being able to walk into a 4wd shop and have the pick of diff ratios, spools (or lockers), LSDs etc etc And if thats not strong enough then Dana60 Quote
BUZ440 Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Yeah Rob you are right on that model, If you leave it 5 stud, you will have ford stud pattern, and get the hoppers kit up front, or wack RX7 brakes on it, they are also ford stud pattern They come out with 4.33 diff gears, you will need to shorten the diff to suit the tubbing of the car, Just go to the drags and query some of the guys who already have it done and have a good look Quote
butler Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 Cheers guys, yeah I've already got a place that will do diffs/axle shortening. We don't really have much in the way of drag racing in adelaide at the moment. I work with a few people who have had tubs done but never done it themselves. At the moment I was just gonna mount a stock diff so the car can be transported for paint/storage etc and I was thinking about hooking it up for shits and giggles. Quote
