G'day guys. Got another question for you.

 

Instead of buying ke20 balljoints ($80) and then spending $60~ on adapters to run ae86 steering arms I'm wondering if i can just put in ke70 balljoints and save myself the money.

 

I know ke20 fits, so my main question is are KE balljoints the same size? I know the tapers different yada-yada.

 

But i'm wondering if physically, like where they press into the Arm if they're the same size?

even if they're different sized, you could get the arms machined to suit the ball joints you want to run.

 

then if you're feeling keen, get the arms reamed to match the taper of the ball joint...

^ I see what you're getting at but that'd most likely cost more than buying the $60 taper adapters

 

If i can press in ke70 ones i can run ajps balljoints and be done with it. Which is what i'm hoping i can do

Its not that easy, last I looked the lower control arm has only a small section around the balljoint hole

so it can't be enlarged and also the balljoints can be different heights for different cars. Then the stud and

taper can be different again. But someone may have found something that works by now... One difficult part

was lack of balljoint catalogues and dimensions to cross reference the application.

something else to try could be te27 steering arms. same pcd as ae86 struts, not sure about taper compatibility.

Yep yep i knew about the te27 arms but were unobtainable so i bought ae86 p/s arms.

 

I know the ke20 balljoint in ke10 arms works

 

I know the Techno Toy Tuning Balljoint adaptor works

 

And i Know the Steering arm will then work.

 

 

The bit i need to know is if physically all the KE balljoints are the same size, So i can just buy ke70 balljoints, be done with it, and bolt it all together

Err, the TE27 arms you decided to put off ending up going to Crostek for $USD70, including post........

 

According to the aftermarket catalogue, KE30, 55, 70, TE72, AE71 & AE86 are all BJ145. KE2x are BJ113

 

 

You need to actively search around the US for these, as they are worth nothing whereas in japan they are expensive.

 

Same as Agius's engine crossmember which I sourced via a guy in Puerto Rico

 

Edit: The aftermarket catalogue has no detail on taper or length of pins, though of course the KE20 and TE27 pin diameter is smaller than the BJ145

Ah, Well i hadn't heard back from you, still not accepted to the board so i bought '86 arms while available..

 

Doesn't worry me too much if i have to run the ke20 and adapter setup just if i can run ke70's and save myself $60.. why not?

your steering ,braking and handling rely on your ball joints being right. if the taper is wrong or they don't fit properly, you could have catastrophic failure.

 

then you'll be saying i wish i just spent the extra 60 bucks.

 

if it was an exhaust tip or something i'd say cut the corner and save your money, but not when it's a critical component.

How is it cutting a corner..? By trying to use the correct balljoints that fit the steering arm than a ke20 one with an adapter?

 

I still don't think you guys get what I'm saying?

 

People would have to change the balljoint when putting ke20 lca's in 30's/70's so at a guess on that they'd have to fit?

i haven't heard of people putting ke20 arms in anything apart from ke20's to be honest.

 

from what parrot has said based on the catalogue, the ball joint is different, so presumably won't fit.

 

if somebody sells an adapter, chances are the two parts weren't compatible using OEM parts.

 

people are trying to help you out here, but it probably would have been easier finding some ke70 ball joints at burson's or autobarn and measuring them.

 

anyway, if you do work something out that somebody hasn't before, it will be worth the mucking around.
