March 20, 200620 yr comment_107822 hey guys well my fuel guage in my ke30 is playin up ... since i got the car, when you fill it up, the needle never goes all the way to the top - sits about 85% full ... Up until recently, it seemed to go down evenly and fall a bit below the empty mark before running dry... Well the other night i was running on what should have been about 10L in the tank (from past experience) (half on, half off the empty mark), and ran out of fuel ... that was 20m before a servo, so i just pulled in and filled up.. Is this likely to be a problem from the guage in the tank, or the dash? I'm guessing it'd be hard to tell ... Its just one of those fiddly little problems that get annoying (like ... no reverse lights, no horn, no window squirters, no passenger door handle, skipping cd player ... :) ) oh yeah, does anyone else have a build up of pressure in the fuel tank when it gets near empty? I'm pretty sure air rushes out, not in ... so its not a vacuum... it makes squeaking noises at night as the air is sucked in through some tiny gap in the fuel cap seal ... I have the same thing wrong with my fuel tank. It sucks because i never know how much fuel i have i am just guessing everytime i drive my car. Report
March 21, 200620 yr Author comment_107869 It sucks because i never know how much fuel i have i am just guessing everytime i drive my car. tru dat yeah i learnt the hard way, had to walk a few k's to the servo once ... a good idea: buy a 5L jerry can, like 12 bucks from the servo, fill it up and leave it in the boot ... so if you ever do run out, just pour it in the tank and you'll be good for 60ks! its saved me once or twice ... and yeah i know its bad to run your tank dry all the time ... boo hoo :) Dyzza Report

March 21, 200620 yr comment_107876 i have probs with my guage too it sits way under empty when its full and works it's way up to about 1/4 of a tank left then falls from there until it's empty, and i only just found out the other weekend my light on my cluster must have blown or something cuz it ran dry. :) looking back on it know it is really funny but it wasnt so at the time. :lolcry: Report
March 21, 200620 yr comment_107897 Replace your fuel sender units people! They're only a metal tab that runs up and down a copper wire, and when that copper wire wears out, or the float on the fuel sender unit manages to get a slight hole, then you'll be in trouble and it wont read correctly. I managed to score myself a practically brand new fuel sender for my KE36 panel van yesterday for 35 bucks and its seems to be working. Won't know properly until tomorrow though. Report
March 21, 200620 yr comment_107985 You can also check if your gauge is faulty by using a potentiometer and putting in different ohms. But it is more likely to be the sender. Report

March 22, 200620 yr comment_108132 early ke 30 senders mount on that 45 deg. part of the fuel tank drivers side, ke55 mount top center, they don't interchange, but i don't know bout the late 30s with the silver dash, should be the same as a 55 an easy way to narow down the problem is pull the wire of the sender and earth it to the body with the ign. on, if your guage goes to full, your senders stuffed, if it stays still your guage is stuffed if your stuck for parts the senders can be re... new copper wired what ever thats called, a good sparkie or appliance repair shop could help Report
March 22, 200620 yr comment_108150 Try toyota. They had the nylon collars for the hinges for my panel van still. I'm sure they would sell new fuel sender units at a hefty price. Best bet is to get one from a wrecker. What i DO KNOW 100% is, is that a KE36 and KE38 wagon have different types of fuel senders. KE36 has a short arm sender unit and a KE38 has a long one. The reason they don't interchange? That's cos the KE36/38's came out with different fuel gauges. One is called a Smith and the other is called something else. The Smith one is the KE36 one. The signals are different between the sender units, therefore they don't register if trying to put a KE38 wagon one in a KE36. I found this out after putting 2 KE38 ones in my KE36. Then i got a practically brand new KE36 one and slapped it in and it works 100%. Sedans though, i'm not sure. Surely the fuel tank in a sedan would be the same design between the 2 models but due to the different manufacturers of the gauges between the two models, i doubt they would be interchangable. November 5, 200718 yr comment_207282 how would you go about wiring in a low fuel light cos i want to run full aftermarket gauges on my dash and ditch the fuel gauge for a simple warning light (say 10 litres left). its in a ke30 Report
