ancullen
I can't believe it. A psychologist in the U.S. decided that he wanted his class of special kids to have a project to do, so he decided to have a crack at a couple of World Land Speed Records!?!?! He bought an SW20 MR2 and had a 4A-GE 20v dropped in. Well, almost. He got a specialist engine company to do some serious modifications to the car, and to make the engine legal, first they destroked it to 1.5L (and got 600+hp turbocharged), then the next year they destroked it further down to 999cc and got about 450hp turbocharged. The car increased the 1.5L Forced Induction land speed record from 152mph (245km/h) to 199mp/h (320km/h) - that's a 47mph or 75km/h increase!!! The next year the team came back with the 1.0L version of the engine and took the 1.0L Forced Induction record from 70mph (113km/h) to 152mph (245km/h) and took the 1.0L Naturally Aspirated record from zero (no one had bothered trying) to 152mph (245km/h). Read the story at the attached link to find out exactly why the N/A record was the same speed as the F/I record, but briefly it was because the turbo had issues because of air pressure or something. Interestingly, the N/A record was achieved using only 9.0:1 compression, so one would assume that far more power would be attainable from a N/A destroked 4A-GE, so a new record is still attainable (RollaClub project anyone?). http://www.bobnorwood.com/The%20Fastest%20...20in%20Utah.htm
ancullen
Just checked the records (at www.landracing.com) and the team still hold four Bonneville Land Speed Records. From what I can tell they either didn't go back or didn't achieve a record with their 3.0L engine. Edited May 1, 2006 by ancullen
Tiger
What about a 5K? :P Destroke that... and hair dry it... you think we'd even get close? :) That's pretty full on!!
love ke70
read this ages ago, its bloody amazing! didnt they run some crazy huge boost on that 9.0:1 engine too? massive feat of engineering, i love the problems that they solved on the day aswell :P one day rollaclub, one day
Dan
Tell ya what... thats a good story, it amazes me what sort of power they were getting out of that.. i wonder what sort of torque figures it had. Aren't they 4AGTE's now though?
rolla_4
(RollaClub project anyone?). You can use my rolla as a test car if ya like :P Its got the 20v already! :) That is pretty full on though..... I would like to see a total cost for the motor build up! :) That would have to have cost a pretty penny!
ancullen
More than a few pretty pennies I would think. And somehow I doubt any Rolla would have the right aerodynamics - at least until we bolt on an aerodynamic nose cone, chop the roof a few inches and angle back the windscreen to all hell. And somehow I doubt the 5K would cut it Tiger. Don't know why, it's just an inkling of an idea. Now a destroked 1UZ-FE - that would make an excellent base for an attack on the 3.0L and 2.5L records. :P

ancullen
An AE92, AE101/2 or AE111/2 would be pick of the lot. But who want's to try going for a Land Speed Record in a FWD? BTW, that 3K-R looks SWEET!!! I love a nice simple cam cover like that, with no plastic covers to block the view.
