  1. Ok so looked this up, it refers to the original vehicle mass so fitting heaver motor and box to bring up the vehicle weight isnt going to work. The information i have relates to QLD so is probably not correct for other states http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/Safety/Vehicle%20standards%20and%20modifications/Vehicle%20modifications/Light%20vehicle%20modifications/NCOP/4sectionlaengine.pdf " 2.13.1 Vehicle Mass The mass of the vehicle referred to in Tables LA1, LA2 and LA3 is the original (unmodified) tare mass of the model vehicle fitted with the largest engine available for the model in Australia but without optional accessories (air conditioning, tow bars etc.). The mass of the vehicle, whether it is a sedan, station wagon, utility, etc., should be based on the heaviest sedan version of the model (not station wagon version) sold in Australia." Now to find out what the heaviest "factory" Australian ke70 corolla sedan with standard accessories . Jes
  2. That could work too, I guess it depends if they refer to the original vehicle weight or the new vehicle weight when its finished. Jes
  3. Ive been thinking about this also. I believe it comes down to this: If the ke70 weighs more than 1000kg it will be 1000ccx2.75 and 2.7L turbo is ok, if the ke70 weighs less than 1000 kg (like 900 you end up with 2.475 turbo). As we know there are many different luxury levels and options available within a single model so what Id like to know is this. Is there an accepted weight that everyone goes by or is an individual thing where you engineer makes you go to weigh station and check it? If so, Ill just be borrowing a bunch of tractor weights from the farmer next door and heading to the nearest scales to get my 1200 car checked. It would be nice if you can just go off the weight of the heaviest possible fully optioned ke70 :) As old mate Buz said above, I think we needs to talk to some engineers to get the good word on this. Jes
  4. States of aussie i mean, (I'm qld). My understanding was the codes of practice allowed up to 2.7 natro or 2.5L turbo for a ke70? Jes
  5. So has anyone actually achieved a 3RZ swap and is it legal in any states? Looks like this has a lot of potential but so many unfinished threads :( Would love to see one in the flesh or know how it goes, Jes
  6. Looks friggin awesome mate, much rust? After a long time away from aussie cars (used to be torana mad), I want my next "decent" car to be either a HQ monaro 2 door or an XA hardtop(leaning towards the ford). I'm also hoping to scrounge up enough money for 460 small block (yes they make one now) crate motor. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m6007z460fft/overview/make/ford Anyway have fun and keep us up to date with lots of pics, Jes
  7. Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm not really worried about the fuel consumption side of things.18RG only revs to 6 grand? Thats seems a bit dissapointing for a twin cam motor,I'm surprised because Ive had pushrod red 6 toranas that revved tonnes harder than that. Yep the 18RG is a good bit heavier, would need to spring and shock it accordingly. Just wondering, though everyone says the 4k and 5K motors rev harder do they actually make any more power at those rpm or just noise? How hard is it safe to rev them anyway? Jes
  8. Ok the initial budget will be somewhat blown but I'm ready to buy and I have two motor/gearbox combos available right now that I'm considering. 1) an 18RG with a 5 speed (its got a single carb but includes all ancillaries, extractors and a tailshaft) 2)a fresh 5K with 5 speed (has no carb but new pistons, rings, bearings, tighe cam, double valvespings shaved head, extractors and a 2" zorst) Both are similar money and either way I plan to use a pair of 40mm dellortos I have sitting here. 18rg will have to weld some mounts, probably cut and weld the tailshaft, hook up a hydraulic clutch slave and pedal 5k will bolt up but carbs will need jetting down to suit (were previously fuelling a 2L so setup for that). What do yas reckon? Can anyone tell me what sort of power difference I'm looking at between the two? Jes
  9. As much as hes an opinionated old bugger, he was the guts of that show. Any other formulas of Top Gear presenters have been crap and failed (US and Aussie attempts), if I was forced to decide between losing the show and losing clarkson Id say let him punch the snot out of any producer he likes. Alternatively the other two could go join clarkson and sign up with Netflicks or discovery channel or whatever? And I agree with you Littleredspirit, Chris Harris produces excellent car testing, his youtube videos of the McLaren P1 and the Singer Porsche are outstanding. Jes
  10. It works, joined the 2 wires and car the car drove home fine, thanks rian and lexsmax! Jes
  11. Anyway heres a pic of the brown and the beautiful :) . I drove this home possibly unregistered from the 85 yr old ladies place this arvo, thanks to the fellas who helped me out with the ballast resistor solution! The drive home was the stuff of dreams, 1.3 litres of untamed power combined with seamless gearchanges from the auto! Actually the drive reminded me a lot of my mums 120y i learned to drive in years ago. And heres some goodies i bought for the corolla this weekend: I drove an hour to look at a 4age package but it wasnt complete enough for my liking so I bought these instead from the same guy. $100 special 13x6 1/2" Jelly beans, ah from the good old days! So Ive kind of decided to go the old school carb/cam and exhaust route in pursuit of noise and negligible performance increase :P These were a bit more than the wheels but just as neccessary, twin 40mm dellortos. Theyre on a datto manifold but were a good price, now to make them fit. I'm not sure whether they will end up on the mighty 4k, or maybe some other kind of motor if something pops up, regardless of donk they are going on the Ke70. Jes
  12. Ok Ive come across a 20v silvertop motor at a sweet price, I read a bunch of threads saying its doable, then called an auto eleccy (does conversion harnesses) who told me the rear distributor is a BIG problem with the conversion into Ke70/ae71. Just wanted to ask if anyone has any clever solutions to overcome this? (I see you can cut/ bash the firewall or there is a dizzy relocation option if you buy an aftermarket bracket type thing) or you can go individual coils for a wasted spark setup but I was hoping to keep the stock ecu and the auto leccy said these two arent really compatable. Anyway just hoping someone more knowledgable than me can give us a heads up on the dizzy issue. cheers, Jes
  13. Ta fellas! Much appreciated, will give it a go, Jes
  14. Thanks, I was kind of guessing along those lines. As you can see there are 3 plugs though (black 1 wire plug far left, white 2 wires in middle and white 1 wire right) any ideas which to join? I also wondered if one of the wires could be for a fuel cutoff similar to this http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/10326-2tc-problem-help/ Thanks Jes
  15. So I was trying to start the newly purchased Ke70. I put a bit of petrol down the carby throat and put jumper leads on it, it took a long time to get pump the fuel to the front as it hadnt been started for over a year. After a bunch of attempted starts fuel finally arrived at the carby. It now starts really easy but as soon as i let go of the key from start to the on position it dies. Then I noticed a bunch of wires not connected just below the coil, a short piece of wire wiuth stripped ends was stuck into one but looks to have fallen out during the start process and I'm thinking some of these should be joined? Can anybody tell me if theres like a power wire needs to be connected to the carby or something cause it feels like the fuel is just shutting off? Thanks for any help, Jes
  16. Thanks for the replies fellas, i intend to use the rolla as a daily. I'm open to suggestions of different motors, preferably toyota. The main requirements are that any conversion be cheap (hopefully sub $500 ish) and easy (virtually bolt in). I'm in qld and was at an engineer mates place yesterday who looked up for me the legal requirements are: For NA engines original vehicle wt (950kg)x 3 then change to CC so this is 2850 or 2.85 L For forced induction same equation x2.5 (instead of 3) so 2375 or 2.3 Would love to try a tuned NA 3rz motor but thats well out of the budget. Hadnt considered the 3tc option yet, thanks Jono! Anybody located in Qld want to sell me some kind of replacement motor and 5spd box? Open to offers/suggestions, Jes
  17. So I'm considering the mechanical direction to head in for the Ke70 sedan Ive bought. The car currently runs well with stock as a rock 4k and auto. Ive been reading up heaps on the thousands of different options and am leaning towards one of 2 plans. A: Cam, carb, exhaust and shave the head on the stock 4k motor. -cam: possibly a Tighe grind as they are local -carb: whatever I can find or make fit (single downdraft webber/dellorto, single sidie or whatever, twins will prob break the budget) -1.75-2inch zorst -shave head B: Buy some other kind of cheap, carbied larger capacity toyota engine(I know of an 18r thats available) that drops in easily. -could do 5k, 7k, 18r regardless of which, if either, way I go I also want to chuck a manual box in it so will need to chase this also. Can I ask a few questions to clarify my findings? 1. Is it true or bullcrap you can bore a 4k to take 5k pistons? 2. to get 9.5-10:1 comp ratio do you shave a stock 4k head 20 thou? 3. Are 32/36 webbers crap on a 4k (some say chokes are too big, if so how do you fix this) 4: If I find an 18r and 5 speed, will I need a new tailshaft? (I'm shying away from a diff upgrade just yet) Cheers for any help/advice Jes
  18. Gday, Ive just joined up after buying a one owner brown Ke70 sedan off an old lady, true story! She wanted the thing gone as she can no longer drive and I felt sorry for her and kind of like the car. Its an 85 i think, brown, auto probably a 4k motor. Its has surprisingly tidy for its age with 2 small spots of rust and is completely original down to the receipt in the glovebox from when she bought it new! Plans at this stage are to throw a set of old style rims on it,( maybe jellybeans, hotwires or minilites) possibly a manual conversion and either warm up the engine or convert to a larger one. Basically i just want to make it a little more fun to drive? Anyway Ive had fun reading around the forum, will post pics soon, catch yas lata Jes
