Hmm soaped maybe, but my opinion stands. I hate manuals. HATE with capitals even. The idea with going fast is having the power connected to the ground. In a manual, you spend a significant amount of time in neutral with the engine doing nothing. That said, 9 times out of ten i would take a KE55 5spd over a KE55 3spd auto. But after driving a new Echo Auto, oh boy i likem de autoze. Just slides between gears with ease, and damn fast too. And anyway, who mates a manual to something with real big power anyway. The drag boys know this thats why nearly all top fuellers/doorslammers are autos. Cos you need the POWER to the GROUND. But hey, each to their own. They both have their uses, I certainly wouldnt be rallying in an auto. Nor would i be buying a manual Commodore. I come from a BIG auto background. I didn't know what a manual was until i went in my uncles ute when I was 9. Quote from Qld Govt Taxi Legislation (or as close as i can remember) on the requirement that all Cabs are Autos "It would be unfair to subject a paying customer to a unsatisfactory ride such as that of a manual transmission" Manuals are novel, but outdated, slow and Way too much effort. I don't really hate manuals. Its clutches i really hate. I would really like a clutchless manual that did the changing for me. Oh wait on, thats an auto!

Go back two years ago and if you had told me i would own a manual corolla, i would have laughed at you. I wanted an automatic Commodore. Space, Pace and Grace. A nice one, like a VS. But I am a poor student. I got my corolla by swapping it for a new computer. These are the reasons why I like my corolla * Never breaks down, just so damn reliable * Flog it so damn hard (flat to the floor everywhere) and it doesn't mind * Haha RWD in the wet * Starts first time every time I will have a Commodore/Falcon on LPG soon. All hail 40c/L. Things I don't like about the corolla *SLOW *Chews the fuel for how fast it isn't *Ugly as shit (ke55) *Dirty f@$kin Manual *Ride is rougher than your mums hairy arsehole I will say one thing though. The corolla has taught me how to drive like no other car.

The SV21's (pre wide-body) are crap. They are the car that made toyota look bad. They chew the juice, they run like shit, they have the WORST suspension ever, they sound like shit, they are sloooow, the auto box has a mind of its own... Wide body was the turning point. Early wide bodys had shit paint, but wide body series two and on are one of the best cars in the world. Ps. wide body and onwards, i would not say the 4cyls are underpowered. SV21's are underpowered big time, but wide bodys and on have HEAPS of power. Not quite commodore beaters, but they will kill most other cars. Brand new camrys have the same power and weight as a VL commodore though....

Listen up children, its storytime with Mr Hardware! Well let me tell you a little about myself. I've always wanted to own a Holden. My dad has only ever owned Holdens. He buys them brand new and keeps them until they turn 10 years old and trades em in for a new Holden. His old man does this also. This has been 'what is the done way' in the family since 1964. My first car? 1980 KE55 Toyota Corolla. I've had it now for 11000km and it is ticking over like a gold watch. I am a mechanic's hand for yellow cabs, so i know a little about EFI 6 cylinders. I have never ever tuned a car in my life, nor seen it done. Anyway, one of my mates at tafe said to me one day, i think your car could benefit from a tune up. I said, yeah but i don't know how to do it. So he said, well, find the gregorys manual for the car and i'll bring in my timing light and dwell meter and we'll have some fun. Before Tune: Idle revs: 700rpm Dwell angle: 60deg Timing: Off the scale it was so retarded. It guess about minus 3deg. After tune Idle revs: 1050rpm Dwell angle: 44deg (i know its supposed to be 46, but it will only increase as the points wear) Timing: 6deg We turned down the idle to about 780rpm and leaned the mixture out just a tiny bit. The whole reason why I was considering getting rid of the corolla soon is cos it was, well, a bit slow. For the first time i can drag people off at the lights big time. I can hit 60 from the lights and see a sea of headlights in my rear vision mirror. My recommendation: If you want power out of your car, don't worry about PULP or other silly mods. Just give it a good service and a good tune!

Erm no In QUEENSLAND we have three numbers followed by three letters. 92 E or F? Nope. E is late 1996/1997 and F is 1998/1999

1. Yes i thought of that too 2. Really? Cool. 3. Okay Alot of people who hit other people these days do a runner. Unless its a new car, people scram. Yes but people who drive 4WDs are braindead, foolish and the scum of the road. I doubt it. Although i do have a very easy to remember numberplate. The numberplate was issued in about 1992/1993, standard numberplate, and its lettering is of a womens piece of underwear. I call them my personalised plates :moon:

I used to own an 1989 SV21 Camry 4cyl Carby 4speed auto air steer It was actually a Holden Apollo Dogs of cars The mechanic at work didnt know i used to own one, and i said to him (he was working on a 94 tarago at the time) aah the tarago, the car that made toyota look bad, and he said nah, these were alright. It was the SV21 Camrys that were the car that made toyota look bad. She used to drink the fuel. Gutless as hell, shuddering automatic, sloppy suspension, horrible exhaust noise. ***STAY AWAY*** Apparently the 1992 SV21 Fuel Injected ones were alright The early ones were crap But then again, so were the VN series one and the EA, all cars were the same era.

Hi all My brother crashed my corolla. Not very bad at all, but enough to be annoying. Luckily the 4WD he hit ran for it, it technically was the 4WDs fault, but it looks simply like my bro had run up the arse of it. What happened: Two streams of traffic going the one way, my bro in the faster stream (of course) and a Maroon Honda CR-V in the slow lane. Maroon CR-V pulls out into bro's lane, bro hits the clutch and the brakes, bang. Nose of the KE55 into the spare wheel cover of the CR-V. CR-V bolts it, bro just pulls off the side of the road. Basically, he would need full details of the driver of the CR-V and a witness before it wouldn't look like he was in the wrong. Poor boy, just turned 17 and had his licence for a month. I said to him that because these three things are true I'm not real upset: 1. It didn't cost him any big dorrah 2. He didn't hurt himself 3. The corollie ain't real bent, just buckled the bonnet a tiny bit. I'm a taxi mechanic's hand for Yellow Cabs, so i know a little about panelbeating :moon: and so i had a go and got it cosmetically pretty good. You can hardly notice. One problem though: The bonnet is still a little structurally bent, and there's a bit of paint off, about the size of a business card. So here's my questions: 1. Is it possible to get another KE55 bonnet somewhere for cheap that's already KE55 Canary Yellow? 2. Or is there some place that will sell me KE55 Canary Yellow paint? Oh and on a side note 3. Where can i get an accellerator cable from?

oh. ok. weird. i always thought it stood for something. toyota in japanese eh.

Hey All Its been bugging me for a little while now, but you know the little symbol on alot of corolla oil filler caps Banjo has it as his avatar What is it? What does it stand for? Why is it on lots of toyotas? Cheers

i see thanks for your help

Headlights? Like a backlight so it comes on with the headlights? And where is the pickup to coil negative from the distributor?
-
Hi All Just a quick question I'm wanting to install/get installed a tacho into my stock standard KE55 I just want a basic cheap one that does the job. Just like the car i suppose. How easy is it? I believe that there needs to be a power lead, ground lead and some sort of information lead from somewhere How is it done? How long does it take?
-
Yeah I've done 10,000km in my KE55 with a 4K-C on ULP and I can't complain Seems to run rather well, its got the get up and go that i like I use FLASHLUBE additive, i find it gives me a bit more billy-o and doesnt seem to run as hot and better fuel economy. Good stuff. I only ever have the running on problem when i've been on the highway fanging it for a while. Probably to do with similar reasons to what demuire said, cept mines got a 4.11:1 diff and a Five speeder. Still, it ain't exactly taking it easy at 130kmh. I'm going to continue to run it on ULP. Can't wait to get my next car though... mmm LPG... mmm 40c/Litre... mmm

I use a dashmat that i got from the strathpine wreckers $10 for one that was basically brand spankin new Stoked
-
Yeah the mechanic at my work keeps on talking about it He says go see it
-
So do you reckon chances are its all in the carby? Thats what it is for me too.
-
No mods whatsoever. I am a computer technician. I have no real Idea about cars. I know how to change oil, oil filter, spark plugs, spark plug leads, battery, air filter, coolant but thats about it. I would not be game to rip off my carby. If i could get 450km from 40L I would be over the moon. I don't even get that on the highway.
-
My grandad has a Vacuum guage in his VH Dunnydore. Does it tell you fuel economy? How much is cheap? And how much is cheap for a carby rebuild?
-
Yeah, i don't feel like killing her to save a few bucks. I know the fuel economy ain't too bad, but after driving Nana's new Toyota Echo Automatic, and having 300km cost me $18 in her, i just wanted one. The only other place you get that kind of saving is LPG. How do you tune a 4K-C? What numbers do i need?
-
Hi All I have a 1980 KE55 Sedan with a stocko 4K-C in front of a stocko 5 speed. She drinks too much for my liking. 400km will be 48L or so, and it doesn't really change much whether I have a bad case of lead-foot-itis, or i granny drive her. Thats city driving though. She comes down to about 40L for 400km of highway. I have changed oil, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs. I use normal Unleaded and FlashLube fuel treatment. She's got plenty of power. I don't need any more power. What are some ways I can make her drink less without losing power, and without costing the earth?
-
My strongest apologies, my mistake. I went and got the manual to scan, and I read it - 50L. I apologise to all. It is infact a 50L tank not a 45L like I had remembered. I must have been getting confused with the stated 45kw - the dismal power output of these motors.
-
Oh okay I have the toyota original owners handbook. I will scan and post soon, i gotta do that for the specs part of the forum anyway. My last fill was 44.92L. I thought i was dead empty, but you're probably right. I'm no expert, and i'd believe you absolutely. I have a October 1980 KE55 Yellow CS Sedan 5 speed 4K-C. Stock as stock can be. Original mudflaps and all. Probably 50L then.
