  1. oh perhaps its not called an egr valve then. my bad. definately not the triangle intake heater bit tho. my 3x and 5x have a hose and valve coming from the rear side of the INTAKE manifold linked to the brake booster. i assume it only came on models which have a brake booster, so the ke20 doesnt have the port for this hose as it didnt have a booster?
  2. ive just finished putting my new ke20 back together, bar one small problem. ive had a read through the FAQ articles but couldnt quite find the answer I'm looking for. KE20s came out with 2 different styles of diff yeah? I'm pretty sure mine is the borg warner. ive got the tailshaft of the correct length, fits into gearbox fine, but where it bolts up the the diff only 2 of 4 holes line up (no matter which way its rotated). seems the diff side is about 10mm more rectangular than the tailshaft yoke (which is almost square). I'm guessing one of the bits is jap spec and one is aus spec? i assume the tailshaft yokes would be interchangeable? id rather swap just the yoke if possible, rather than swapping the whole rear axle. does anyone have the more rectangular yoke for sale??? also if someone could tell me which bit is which thatd make it easier to track down at a wreckers. cheers!
  3. can't seem to find the nice neat table of power figures i found the other day, but this is off some other website about corolla history "Early Corollas in this range (KE3x) with 3K engines produced 73hp (54kW) from just 1166cc. However emissions became a problem further into the 1970s, and the 4K engine in the KE5x series produced only 60hp (45kW), despite and increased capacity of 1290cc. These figures are fairly optimistic (probably tested without ancillaries such as alternators or water pumps) to make the car look good for sales, in reality most Corollas of the time produced about 30hp (22kW) at the wheels, which can be estimated to 45hp (34kW) at the flywheel." read more here
  4. if you don't want to pay for aftermarket mags and just want cheap ones off another car, ive used datsun 260z mags, supra mags, sigma mags, cressida mags... most 4 stud RWD cars of the same period and stud pattern fit pretty good. havent gone past 6" wide tho... widest ive gone with no issues is 195s on front, 205s on rear. corona ones don't fit up front unless you are running corona struts.
  5. I'm going through this head scratcher as well. got a complete 3k and 4k setup that I'm swapping bits between. i actually read somewhere that the stock 4KC, with californian emissions, is about 58HP. the stock 3K is just over 70HP! i believe it too, the 3K from an old KE30 sedan i had has always gone better than the 4KC from a ke55 coupe. revved more freely, throttle more responsive, and pulled harder. the 3k has bigger ports all round too, but I'm not sure if that means its the bigport motor or if all 3ks are like that? that said, ive ended up putting the 4k in the car as it was in better condition, now i can't decide whether to work the 4k or rebuild and work the 3k. from memory i reckon the stock 4k with a 4 speed in the ke55 sat on about or just below 4000rpm at 100kph.
  6. just thinking though, what car is this in?? cause if its a ke30 or higher id say definately use the 4-2-1 headers. in which case a ke30 3k or 4k intake will bolt up to it (as opposed to a ke20 3k where the bits seem to need to be ke20 specific). and the ke20 3k intake seemed to be a bit longer as well as having bigger ports.
  7. yeah agree as above... ive just done this myself, tried to find the best bits out of a complete 3k and 4k engine/manifolds/carby to run the 4k in a ke20. ended up (out of neccessity) going with the 4K motor, 3K 4 into 1 headers (purely to bolt up to exhaust that was already on car), 3k bigger port intake manifold (even though the ports on the motor are smaller...) with a 4k carby on top. had to use the ke20 3k intake because the 3 bolt triangular mount that joins the exhaust and intake manifolds point opposite ways to the 4k and ke3x 3k bits! these intake manifolds don't sit right on the ke20 3k exhaust manifold so doesnt bolt up to the engine right. also the 3k intake not having the EGR port worked out well as the ke20 doesnt have a brake booster to connect that hose to. also had to switch the accelerator mechanisms on the carby because the ke20 has a different accelerator cable that clips on instead of sliding in the slot. does that make any sense? it ended up working just fine, no leaks. hope that helps!
  8. i was going to mention that mine are just festering in my shed somewhere... but nevermind. i actually relocated the front one to the bottom of the apron for a while, made for a damn aggressive looking front skirt haha
  9. my 55 came out with the wrap around bumpers and i got rid of them as soon as i tracked down ke30 shorter ones. when i took off the wrap around ones i noticed there was a body coloured metal spacer trim that filled the gap between the body and the bumpers. bout 2 inches long. without them it looks a bit wierd, could that be it? and yes there was also a bracket on the ends of each wrap around to make it sit solid
  10. Shes a sweet (if not ridiculously overpowered) ride... can't wait to see the front lift up when you finally sort out the traction issues haha Youve done well ryan! also i may have to see if we can make 2 sets of front brake upgrades out of the bits i gave you... i don't think mine will stop well either even with a lot less power.
  11. in SA you can got up to a 5k without engineering. just an ID check for the new engine number. but an ID check is also a basic roadworthy.
  12. ive actually got both sorts. thanks for that!
  13. super sweet. cheers for the info! running a gt40 coil so ill keep the resistor on. i thought the clutch cables seemed the same (minus the rubber stopper), so that makes me feel better. great news about the brake splitter. time to go rip a few more bits off my ke35 then... including possibly the motor and box... anyone want a rusty but straight ke35 coupe shell??
  14. hah yeah she is almost ready to go, just gotta sort these issues then its off to get painted. only taken about 8 hours so far ;)
  15. thats the one!
  16. ^ + 1 or carry a spare steering wheel to keep your passenger entertained / hold out drivers window and scream. its suprisingly fun.
  17. there is a guy who comes to your house and does it to any tires for fairly cheap. can't remember his name. will post it up if i find it, but i reckon its in the yellow pages!
  18. Hey all just looking to pick some brains. I'm putting together a KE20 from rolling shell, using a lot of spare KE55 bits i have. Almost done but have a few queries. - Clutch cable - do these differ at all from Ke2x - KE3x,5x? - Do KE20s need the white rectangular resistor on the side of the ignition coil? The KE3x,5x seem to all have one, but noticed a few pics of KE20s don't. - Exhaust/inlet - Currently have the 4-2 stock headers from a KE5x that join to the inlet manifold. The KE20 only has a single pipe so I'm getting the 4-1 stock headers tonight. Does this mean i need a different inlet manifold too to get rid of the gaping hole in the bottom for the exhaust join? Or could i just block up the bottom of the inlet manifold with a plate? - Brake pressure splitter on firewall - anyone got one spare?? and the 2 metal brake lines to run from it to the single cylinder master (no booster)? if so ill buy them. - 3K or 4K bits? ive put the 4K motor in the KE20 but i have a complete 3k running gear in another spare car. are there any bits i should bother swapping over for performance. eg head / carby? The 3K (in a KE35) seems to go a fair bit harder and crisper than the 4K ever did in the KE55. I thought maybe because the 4K carby has more emissions crap on it? May actually just use the 3K carby because its the only one with the knob for the KE20 accelerator cable to join onto. Unless someone has adapted a ke3x/5x accelerator cable in a KE20? Any help MUCH APPRECIATED. Cheers, Paul
  19. i think thatd be me. had "STIG" stickers on the rear quarter windows of my cream grandpa spec 55 coupe for a fair while. i thought it was pretty funny but the cops didnt like it one bit and i ended up taking them off after getting a canary and a cheeky trip to regency.
