  1. Thanks guys by the sound of it the old flywheel may be a bit risky to machine down to much. might leave that for a bit longer before i do anything. I'll have a look around for an aftermarket one like you suggested travis. don't want to spend to much so i'll see what happens. Cheers Jacob
  2. Yeah i'd read that topic before and a couple of others. but it didn't really say much about what people thought it did to there cars performance after they lightened the flywheel. Wanting to find out what people are running and how this affected the engine.
  3. Hi all i have a spare 4k flywheel wanting to know how light i could get it machined down. wanting to get an idea what is a good weight that people have used and what it did for making revs but still being drivable on the roads. Any info of what others have done and how it went would be great. Cheers
  4. New engine and 5spd yewww!! :P Well this last two weeks it has either been raining or I'm at work which has made progress limited. I got this weekend free so decided to fit the new engine and 5 speed gearbox i recently bought. Original engine. *el stocko 4k engine *extractors leaking. *bearing in water pumped stuffed. *alternator bracket stuffed *reconditioned alternator *A fuel guzzling 4 speed box New/donor engine .*4k-c with all the emissions crap. *reco head and shaved a bit * 83 ke70 5 speed box. After mixing and matching *4k-c block , fuel pump, water pump *reconditioned alternator * none emissions carbie, thermostat housing and intake manifold *none leaking extractors *3k dizzy *New spark plugs * 5 speed box. * new uni joints on the way + going to do a full service and tune up. To fit the KE70 5spd box into a manual 1975 ke35. I had to modify the gearbox cross member and cut a new hole in the transmission tunnel 100ml back from the old one for the new shift stick. all went in pretty smoothly. When it was all in there was some tense moments. went to fire up first time nothing but hot earth wires and flat battery. doubled checked all the earth wires and tightened, turned the key nothing. pulled out the plugs (crap) put new ones in turned the key didnt fire. checked dizzy, points weren't opening, adjusted still didn't go. checked to make sure everything had spark, it did. Top dead centred it and corrected timing, fired up but wouldn't idle. .. ....then finally messed around with coil connections. fired up and ran great. yewww!!!!! Here's what i got up to. The original engine coming out. This box was full of random gaskets.i was told if could find one that i needed i could have it. managed to snag one. The manifold gaskets i scored for free. even got the metal inserts to stop the exhaust blowing out. took ages to find but got them.
  5. Hey just wanting to find out what you have to do to get involved with this sort of thing. looks like fun. *what licences do you need ? *how much etc? Any info would be much appreciated.
  6. Yeah sorry i probably wasn't that clear. some of the areas where i have used body filler and fibre glass bog have still got some bit's where air bubbles in the bog came out after sanding. The other thing it will sort out is some of my remaining highs and lows. so need to fix them up with spray putty as you pointed out (plus get rid of small amounts of mapping ). also the polyester based stuff i have been recommended can be put over your primer undercoat rather then bare metal like most require. Thanks though for making sure that i wasn't about to fill my car up with spray putty. Cheers Jacob
  7. Here are a few more picks of what the car was looking like after spending most of saturday working on it. This is what it looked after alot of hours sanding and smoothing. still might being adding some polyester spray putty to make even a bit more smoother. Some undercoat finally applied. Started work on the otherside which is a whole lot straighter so should be much quicker. Can't do to much on the car today. electric sander packed it in and run out of rust converter/primer. might do some tinkering with the new engine. What do ya's think? got any tips on panel work.
  8. Checked out this Build in progress today. looks menacing. going to be a powerful weapon when it's running. also thanks again for the parts Mark, there all back home and looking at being installed soon.
  9. The engine bay looks wicked mate. It looks more powerful just being clean. the carbies will make it look super tough. Got any more pics of the car? Looks like it could have just rolled of the floor 30 odd years ago.
  10. When i first looked at how it all bolt's together it does look kinda confusing. When you pull it of you will notice that the intake manifold is bolted to the original exhaust manifold. just unbolt the two pieces after you have pulled them of the block. As you pull it apart it should all make more sense. When you do come to fitting the extractors make sure that the intake manifold and the extractors bolt up tight against the block. because sometimes the intake will be bolt up tighter then the extractors (and vice versa ) leaving a gap which will eventually blow out your gasket. you'll know if you haven't fitted them correctly because a ticking noise will arise after some driving time. Heres some pic's of two 4k engines one with extractors and one with out. this should clarify things a bit. Without Extractors. you can see how they bolt togther. With extractors. You can see how the intake manifold doesn't connect to the extractors.looks odd but works good. Hopefully this helps out a bit.
  11. Today was like christmas. New engine purchased and back at home. Got a 4k and KE70 5speed + some spares. Looking to have the new engine and gear box put in a couple weeks time. see how that goes only talk at moment. Also heres a few pic's Rolla Goodies. yah This is where I'm up to with dent removel. did some boggin up to find all my lows. what you can see now is what should smooth it out after i sand it back. have become a friend of fibreglass bog me thinks.
  12. Hi all Quick update. Been doing heaps of work on the car and looking to the have body sprayed soon. Then i can put the panels back on as i complete them. Also getting a new engine this week but wont be chucking it in straight away. Didn't get a 5k but got a 4K and 5speed instead. should be a good upgrade from the four speed anyway. also i wont get smashed by the cops for this. Should be a few pic's up tomorrow.
  13. Hi Vinnie The seats i think are the original ones and where retrimed along with the rest of the interior. some of the black paint on the side of seats has worn of revealing the trade mark turd brown so quessing there original could be out of something else not sure. they are comfy but not as comfy as the seats of a N12 pulsar i owned.
  14. Yeah would be really keen to see it. I'll send a PM with my number and we can work something out when your coming through. Cheers Jacob Crisp ("crispy'" is a life long nickname so i stick with it)
  15. Nice ride should go hard when your done. be good to see & hear it finished.
  16. Thanks mate I'm glad i was able to get it. it actually went through the first time on ebay without any one bidding on it. didnt have the cash the first time round but when it came up again i got my mate who fortunately lived nere by to check it out . then someone offered more for it then me and i lost interest (after many months of searching you get use to it). but two days later the bloke who owned it rang up and told me i could have it for $650 (he knocked 50 bucks of what i offered for travelling so far) . took me eleven and a half hours to get there by train. picked it up at ten oclock at night and then put all my faith into it and drove the car 8 hours back home. so it was an epic adventure to get it. if you saw how many problems were listed it would scare most people off. but since ive had it on the road nothing has gone wrong. the exhaust needed fixing but that was easy only a small piece missing so i replaced it with extractors. it was noisy though coming straight out of the manifold. Q. are the panels straight, or do you have to do some tidying up of dings etc? A.other then under those stone trays the car is almost perfect exept for one main dint in the drivers side guard. i should be able to fix it pretty easily though. the rust in the car is almost non existant which is a real plus. the only big problems that has caused some issues was removing the nearly 2mm thick paint that it had been resprayed with. but i have taken it back to either bare metal or orginal paint with a paint scraper and angle grinder. Q.looking forwards to following this buildup. any ideas of what engine package you're going? A. I'm actually lining up a 5k and a 5 speed as we speak. if i can afford it i will hopefully be purchasing soon. I'm still on my p plates so i can't go to nuts with the engine but this is about the biggest i can go without being suspect. I do like the note of the old school engines though plus one day i would love to put twin sidedraught solex carbies on it. keeping it simple for now. Cheers i'll check out your project
  17. Thanks, Ive been spending some long hours on it between working and crap weather. I also have to go back to uni soon so that will slow things down. getting as much done now. although because it is the first time ive ever done such a project I'm still having to stop and think about how I'm going to do certian bits. have been talking to dad and a few other people tyring to get as much info as possible. so far it seems to be working.
  18. more pics. found out what the stone trays were covering up. some bogging up will be needed. This was the final product after some undercoat was applied.
  19. Hi all The last few days i have started to make some serious progress with the new paint job. also getting some plans thought up to put a 5k and 5speed box into the rolla ( this will happen when my budget allows it). Any way here are some pics . Rolla with all the paint scraped exept for dogey stone trays and the rear end. A bare butt corolla after a good few hours with a angle grinder fitted with a wire brush.
  20. Thanks heaps the info provided has really been helpful. it has given me some more direction for my project. I'm on a tight budget but have plenty of time and motivation so that really helps. good to know that this conversion may actually happen. With a bit of luck there may be a 5k sitting in place of the 4k. Cheers, for the much appreciated help.
  21. Sweet that has sorted out a few issues. I'm sure there still will be more issues but that seems to have addressed my major concerns. Cheers and thanks for the help.
  22. Hi i currently own a 75 ke35 with a 4k , 4 speed manual and looking to upgrade to a 5k and a 5 speed. at the very least leaving the 4k but putting in a 5 speed. Not got huge amounts of knowledge but have read a few different things from forum topics about the conversion. most generally seem to say its a bolt in job but that is rarely the case (ie don't want to start this project until i know of everything involved). would like to get the hidden cost factor a bit more sorted. listed below is what i have found from the forums. would like to know any more problems i might find. *need to shorten and rebalance tailshaft? *cut new whole for the shift stick of the 5speed ?. *larger starter (not got enough torque) and possibly different alternator ? *different distributer? *various wiring changes? * need a different set of coils? as you can see I'm a bit skecthy on the details. Hopefully this isn't just another annoying question from a newcomer. any help will be greatly appreciated.
  23. Had to put the car on hold a bit this week. got called into work a fair bit on the sunny days and raining the rest. but anyway managed to strip most stuff of the car. The car doors are now removed, and all the panels except bonnet. removed most of the chrome parts. and took out tail lights etc. got lots of little bags now with all my bolts nicely labeled so it should go back together a bit quicker at lest. Wouldn't mind finding out how it accelerates now it has a whole lot less weight. :hmm: this is what it looks like. you can tell it was originally yellow.
