red mango Posted January 8, 2007 Author Report Posted January 8, 2007 (edited) these are the pistons that my ze engine had. notice that the one on the right doesn't have the "cuts" (clearance for valves?) on the head. i have visually compared the 2 pistons and them look identical in shape and size except for the cuts. the 2 other pistons we pulled out are similar to the one on the left (with cuts). is there any way of knowing if these are genuine ze pistons? or do i end up buying a new set to be sure? help much appreciated. thanks. MRMOPARMAN Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 easy way to tell, the factory GZE pistons had ceramic tops. GE's didnt. Quote
Foxtail Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 They look like 3SFE pistons 4AGZE pistons are almost flat, but do have valve cuts. Quote
gearb0x Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Ive got no idea how to tell but i can offer photos (although slightly blurry) of the 8.0:1 CR factory GZE pistons that came out of my MR2 http://gb.detonated.org/gallery/engine-rebuild/DCP_3523 http://gb.detonated.org/gallery/engine-rebuild/DCP_3526 http://gb.detonated.org/gallery/engine-rebuild/DCP_3527 the 8.9:1's have flat tops, the lower compression ones have a dish Quote
Mr Revhead[RL] Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 in your pics above, is the same piston on the left all the way through? the left one looks like a genuina 8.0:1 4agze piston the one on the right looks like an aftermarket one the catch is on the bottom pic i can see ART on the underside ART make the 4agze pistons for toyota heres some pics i have of new 8.9:1 and 8.0:1 Quote
red mango Posted January 15, 2007 Author Report Posted January 15, 2007 thanks a lot for the photos. i went around the wreckers but all of them were unsure of the odd looking piston (the one without the cuts). as all of them recall the ze piston having cuts. naturally, i don't want to have any problems later on (like engine won't start for starters) so i've decided to get another surplus block (with pistons and internals). luckilly, i was able to source out what looks like a relatively "fresh" one. kickn5k Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Correct me if I'm wrong but i thought that gze pistons must run oil squiter cutouts too or is that just for the 3sgte. I just thought sets i have made had in the past had the cutouts about 45deg from the pin on the bottum of the skirt. i may be mistaken your thoughts Cam? Quote
Mr Revhead[RL] Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 only the 8.9:1 have the cut outs, you can see them on the right hand piston in my pics. the pics at the very top of the thread are of 8.0:1 pistons which don't have cut outs Quote
