Hey All !

Yes, its that time of month again -> ive got another random idea !

While looking down the ports of my spare 3k biport head, i started to think...Hymm...Side draft is good, but theres not too much room... straightner kit for k motor is too much bother...eghhh...

*ping*

Ah Ha !

What do you get when you cross a 4ke inlet manifold, side draft intake manifold, 2 very nicely balanced down draft webbers, angle grinder and one of mr Dixon's ultimo welding/metal fabrication friends?

A verticle side draft inlet manifold system :D !

(cut 4ke inlet manifold in half (middle of bend); slightly pull in the intake manifold pipes for cyl's 2 and 3 (to get an even distance between all 4 pipes), cutt the side draft inlet manifold off at where carbys join onto manifold and custom weld onto 4ke inlet manifold where previously cutt & add 2 Webbers or what ever floats your boat on top ! :))

hope that makes sence

in my mind - why would you bother doing this?

Well, side draft system is very effective in the power department, but as every one knows, theres not much room on the right side of a K motor -> and if you did this idea, you could maintain the direct flow of air/fuel (like on a side draft, but verticle) insted of a sharp 90° ish bend like in the stock inlet manifolds ! the 3kb inlet manifold is able to hold 2 carby's, but its stilll got the harsh 90ish bend.

1 other thing is fuel evap. this idea means that insted of the webbers being stuck directly above the exhaust manifold, they will sit much higher (more room for heat sheld plating stuff) - id say they would actually sit a bit higher than the position of a stock inlet manifold = may have to cutt a hole in bonet and stick a lil scoop over with the air cleaner elements sticking out :)

i think that is everything... !

Matt, we need to look at a home made "slant draft" EFI system

sounds like you need an SU manifold.

have thoughts of later adding injectors and a fuel rail to a set of SU's. you'd rip the guts out of the carbs. add TPS and MAP sensor.

oldschool looking EFI.

Teddy, IDA webers are a down draft carb that looks very similar to the side draft version. I think you would have to cut a long hole in the bonnet to make them fit though. While your at it, you may as well install a PA system and yell "PLEASE PULL ME OVER" at any passing police car. Particularly if your car is painted in primer..... (Sorry Mumblezzz, couldn't resist!!)

*Edit: draft=airflow, draught=beer*

Ive got 3 spare SUs that are...probably not much good to recover as carbys...

don't you think it would look a little suss with high pressure lines and wiring going to the vaccum chamber?? lol

you can get efi throttle bodies in the shape of dcoe webers, they usually come with variable tps output that you calibrate an aftermarket computer to. they're shorter than real webers too. there are several ways of mounting injectors in a throttle setup like this, usually they get put in the manifold as close to the head as possible, pointing towards the inlet valve so the heat of the valve atomises the fuel and the fuel cools the valve. in a racecar, you mount the injectors at the bellmouth of the intake, and box the lot. this is best for max power but not so good for idling or legality

as much as it's a nice idea, if you were going to go to all that trouble and effort and still use some shitty downdraft weber or something, you may as well get sidedrafts or SUs and do it better, cheaper

Holley sell entire down draft kits. Throttle body/injectors, ECU, fuel pump everything else you need. From 400cfm to about 900cfm I think. I'm going to try and source some prices because I'm getting sick of carbys drinking my fuel. I might as well just light a bonfire out the front and put all my money in there caws thats effectively whats happening.

Well they come in down draft because thats what they use on the V8s (although I have seen a quad 45DCOE setup on a supercharged V8). My main idea in using a down draft carb setup is that I don't have to f*ck around with manifolds. I can pickup a 2T-GEU manifold and attached accessories for about $90...but I think I THEN have to do a twincam conversion (add another $300 for the components and then $100 for the head gasket x2)

IDA's would be nice. they outflow DCOE webers. very expensive, the rotary guys want like $750 to a grand for them.

the Holley EFI idea sounds good, but would be expensive. you would be better off going to a 3tgte Ben.

thought about putting an O2 sensor and an A/F mixture display in your car? makes it way easier to set up a carb.

Grimwolge, the Megasquirt sounds good.

might have to get an Ultra Megasquirt when they finally come out. injector control, ignition control, and wide band O2 sensor compatible. mmm..... sounds good to me. make it worth the change to proper EFI.

ill need a leson or 2 on what excatly has to be done - then give me time, and lots of coke and anything is possible

if you wanted to be really cheap you could use the downdraft throttle body and injector setup off of a XE/XF falcon before they went to MPI

is that single point throttle body injection? after seing how that went on pre-xc barinas, i think i'd rather the carby
