Hi fellow rollas,

just wanted to know if anyone else out there is having the same problem i have. I just bought a 91 GTicorolla with 17' vault rims and everytime i go approximately over 70km/ph the steering wheel shakes and it gets worst the faster i go. Normal driving speed 60 km/ph, everything seems fine. I'm not sure if its the rim size or tyres not being balanced properly? or something to do with the axels (loose joints maybe?)

does anyone know what that is all about or is having/had the same problem? and how i can fix it?

any advice would be greatful!

Swap the tyres & rims front to the back to eliminate the tyres & rims, if that doesn't work check front disc brake rotors and drive shafts for balance/ damage.

yeah its most likely the balancing or rims are buckled.

else its steering / suspension / braking components

Pretty much. You need to either Rotate and Balance your wheels. Or buy new ones?

Though I'd stick with the Rotate and Balance idea.

I had a similar problem with car I once owned. It was front wheel drive and ball joints were stuffed. the problem went away after 80km/h. just happened between 60-80. Previous owner tried to fix the problem by welding the ball joints in.

You get used to it after a while just drive faster. As a backpacker you don't like wasting money on stuff like that. These days I would fix it though.

negitive castor can cause a steering shimmy. however unless the cars been smashed i don't think its possible to get that much neg castor on an AE92 iirc.

check the tyres for bulges, and get them balanced for starters. check your wheel bearings, balljoints, tierods (inner and outer) bushes etc for wear and damage. also driveshafts can wear oddly in the CV and not show up (eg clicking in corners etc), that can be tricky to diagnose.

this may sound stupid but check to make sure the wheels are mounted on the hubs correctly (assuming they've been off recently)

If your CV's were u/s they would make a click clacking noise as you turned the wheel to full lock and applied power, would have to be disintergrating to cause a wobble.

as i said in the previous post, they can be f@$ked, but not click on turns. had this exact problem at work 1 week ago on an n14 pulsar, and about a month ago on a PT cruiser. both shook the shit outta the steering wheel at 60+kmh but never clicked on turns. makes things a pita to diagnose
