well hi, i'm new here, and this may have been done before idunno, i looking at putting a 4AGE into my AE82 corolla, i was just wondering if there are any good sites/books on rebuilding these engines, and then if anyone has done one of these conversions, how much work is involved in them?? sorry if this is elsewhere, but i used the search thing and couldn't find much

be a lot cheaper to buy an ae82 with a twin cam in already- would look better too.

the conversion is straight forward, so long as you have everything such as the fuseboxes and looms. all i changed was the engine i still have my single cam gear box attached, the cross member and exhaust.

 

you'll find that people on this site will give you as much help as they can.

You could buy a AE82 twincam with all the work done but you might have spent alot of your SOHC model so you might not want to get rid of it or whatever.

 

Anyway you will need a complete 4AGE engine, Gearbox, Engine loom with all sensors, Cabin loom, EFI fuel tank, Oil cooler system, Drive shafts etc. Your putting a twincam in a ae82 SOHC which has shit brakes so you might as well take the brakes from a twincam as well.

 

If you really want to keep your ae82 buy a twincam and transfer as much of it over as possible.

go all out and get a GZE front cut

i'm not sure if i wanna go charged atm, i mean yeah the power would be addictive, just the money thing..... maybe later on i could pull the engine out again and either super or turbo it...iunno yet, we will see.

You can use your existing gearbox, shafts etc. just don't expect it to last very long.

Rear hubs are different to the single cam as well so you just can't pull the drums off and replace with the disks.

I'm in a similar position.

my 4A-C has just died in my ae82 hatchback, i have recently bought another ae82 with a 4AGE in it. unfortunately, it is a liftback.

 

 

i have two options here, i can put the 4age and the disc brakes into the hatch, or simply use the liftback.

 

i would just like a straight answer as to what is required to firstly change the engine over, and then change the brakes.

 

of course, the hatch looks so much better than the liftback and i would rather use that, but only if its remotely feasible.

 

so specifically,

what are the differences in the loom? or are they the same any way?

and would it be best to swap the gearbox over as well - just to be on the safe side?

The single cammer doesn't have a loom in the EFI sense, injector wiring etc. So you would have to do something about that - swap it over. (unless someone else says differently).

Gearboxes are the same. Use the one that feels nicer though the gears.

Or just put up with the roomer liftback.

Or you could do a search on the forum cause someone else has a twin carby 4a-g

I have a 4ac seca and am also wondering what to do.

 

I like the look of the seca's and there's only about 20kgs difference between the seca and the hatch. Its a lot of effort to swap stuff over especially when (I'm guessing) its in a perfectly good car.

 

Is the c52 (twincam) box the same as the c50 (4ac/4af box)?

 

Carby 4ag's setups usually end up costing just as much, if not more than the efi versions as you need to start worrying about spark only cpu's etc. and you end up with a result that might have a similar top end power but not as much getting up there.

 

Good luck finding a stocko bigport rolla these days with decent kms that hasn't been thrashed to high heaven. If you're not mechanically minded then conversions or rebuild costs usually make it a not very realistic option. It might not seem like the cheap way but try and find someone who's already rebuilt their 4age or put in a fresh engine. Just be weary that they haven't cut corners. You usually get what you pay for.

You can swap everything from ya seca to the hatch, Its just time consuming. Cabin loom and engine will need to be swapped over as with gearbox, Struts, fuel tank etc.
