Guys, I have a spare KE70 lamp sitting around and thinking of putting LED instead. Would it be considered illegal if I convert the original light bulb to a few rows of LED lights? (DIY soldered together)

Won't be any different from outside, but it will definitely be brighter when the light is on.

Where abouts are you wanting this to be legal?

 

I however doubt it very much. I doubt that it would be brighter. LED's tend to not have the penetration required to be a decent torch, let alone a light to drive with. With the lights on my 35, I can see approximately 3km's. Can't see an LED doing that.

 

You can try it, but I really doubt it's effectivity.

Headlight or taillight? If taillights, LED's are used widely in taillights of a lot of new cars now so I can't see why it wouldn't be legal as long as it still met the rule on visibility (some distance I can't remember.)

The old cars have diffusers built into the tail lights while I'm sure the new cars don't. That's why the LED's look so good in them. I have LED bulbs in my tail lights and its looks kinda gay as just the center is lit up and not the lends. Tho I didn't go to the extent of putting in panels of LEDs, mine was just LED bulbs.

 

Remember if you change all your indicators over to LEDs you will need to replace your flasher unit to an LED one.

Only load sensing flasher units flash fast with LED bulbs. You can add LED bulbs to your Ke70 or what ever but you will need to wire in a normal bulb somewhere in the circuit like in the boot somewhere so it can't be seen and it will flash more normal and if its still quick use a 24v bulb. LED's use less current than normal filament bulbs so you need to keep the load like normal hence the hidden bulb/s. The only way i can see the indercators not flashing is if the circuit is stuck closed ?

 

Most LED bulbs are not ADR approved so if you get a bastard cop and he spots them its defect time. They need to be ADR approved. The only light/s i would add to an older car is a reverse spot light.

 

Even most spotlights are not ADR approved and are defectable. If the packet doesnt have the ADR logo or writing anywhere they arnt approved.
