Jason Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 (edited) I'm getting for my Bday an air compressor and spray gun kit and hopefully some air tools, now i just need my bday to be 3 months ahead so i can get it.... :D I was originally just going to do the back half because of the guard rust, but now i seriously thinking. Exactly what do i have to do for a spray job would it be hard to repaint it black... mmm black Sand it all back, time consuming, but would the whole thingit be worth it? Black Ae71 would look beast. Nice shiny black or just redo it white? If black how many coats more would i need? What about the gloss coats? How many would i need? Just need to see prices. If i go a head it wont be done until this thing can move :D I'm probably just crapping on and dreaming to much, but how feasible is it? Edited January 28, 2005 by Jason Quote
Redwarf Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Unfortunately gloss black will show every impefection in the entire car. It's probably the hardest colour to paint the car and have it look any good. Paint for Bluey was $200 for four litres. After engine bay an two exterior coats, we have about 1 and a half litres left. We put a number of evening and a weekend of hard graft into Bluey to prepare it, and it came out fine for what we wanted. It looks great at 20 feet, closer than that and you start seeing imprefections. For a first timer, I will almost guarantee that it won't come out as good as you will have wanted, I know my Mark one paint job didn't. However, the best way to learn is to do it yourself. You have to weigh up what you want out of it. As a learning experience, it's second to none, you'll never get better. However, you may not get the result you want. Hope this helps. R Quote

Redwarf Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Matt black tends to send a message to Police: "Please pull me over..." Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Yeh Matt black is used by the miltary so they will suspect that you are using radar evading super dooper paint. I love spray painting, I've spray painted my yacht more times then I can remember, only to stuff up and have to sand it back downa and start again, If I stuff up any more I'll sand the whole hull away. demuire Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 Paint and thinners for Hal was about $250 or so (I keep thinking it was more, but that's all I seem to have records for). I think that was for 8L of white, 4L of black. I used up about 6L of white (because white doesn't cover well, and because our spray gun was broken, and because silly me used green primer), and about 1/2L of black for the bonnet, and I painted that twice (due to stuff up first time). Black covers VERY well. As Rob said, for a first time job, stay with the bright colors like white. Dark colors show imperfections easily, and believe me, your car will look like a million dollars in primer, and then you put the top coat on and all of a sudden it all turns to shit. Hal looks great (almost) from 20 meters, come up close and all the imperfections come out to play... Quote

Medicine_Man Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 I went through 2 x 4 litre tins of paint on my car when we were painting it, few panels blushed and we had to respray them.. Quote
