rjenman Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 CLICK FOR IMAGE I've been trying to unscrew one of the bolts that hold the fuel pump onto the block.... assuming they are double ended.... Excuse me for having little knowledge of fastners, hardware stores and "the store formerly known as coventry auto parts" don't know either, and mates, all have no idea how to do this aside from with an extractor screw or "easy outs" which sound like they do the same thing. Pictured is the bolt in question with an extractor screw that I've been trying to use to remove it. Any suggestions? Its not really working. I've tried using a spanner with the extractor... it shaved off some meat from the inside... should i drill deeper and saw off the end of the bolt and try again? How would you get these frigging things out without using an extractor screw?!?! Surely there's a way to get these nuts out without destroying them?!?! Quote
7shades Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Vice grips worked for me... destroyed the stud, but you're doing that anyway so no biggie Quote
the_random_hero Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 If the thread is still decent, you could do it the same way you insert/remove head studs. Quote
Teddy Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Either re-tap the thread, and put 2x 12 mm nuts on it, and tighten them up aginst one another, using the nut on the inside of the 2 (closest to the engine) to try and wind it out. Or Weld a T bar onto it somhow and undo- it Or vice Grips as stated above Or Try freezing the stud some-how with a range of legal and illegal substances, and then vice griping it out Or Soak in WD40, Hit end of stud with a metal, flat ended hammer & then one of above methods Or Call one of those mobile stud removal guys Or Put on an electric fuel pump, as it sounds like you've been having fun with the.. lack of fuel lately lol. TE278U Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 ask your local specialist tool shop to order you in a set of cam style stud extractors as pictured. just slide it over the stud, and it will unwind piece of cake. it will also reinstall them when you're ready to put new ones in. Quote
Damon550 Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) i recently had to extract a sheared off bolt and i found the type of easyout your using was useless in the end i used a square one, looked like a tapered peice of key steel, i got someone to tap the end of the easyout with a hammer while i turned it Edited November 13, 2008 by Damon550 Quote

philbey Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Incidentally, I just got some plates laser cut to blank off the fuel pump hole if you upgrade to Electric. 316 Stainless, could even polish it up. PM me if you want one, cheap! Quote
love ke70 Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 pull the other stud out, and that should give you heaps of room to get a good set of straight vice grips clamped on there really *** tight. then hit them with a hammer. also, soak it in a product called "rost off" if you can find it, yes, rost, or if you can't, a product called bolt off is also bloody good, works much better than wd and rp7 etc ezy outs are useless, left handed drill bits are a better idea, you drill the centre of the stud out, until it removes enough material and they grab and turn the stud out, if it doesnt do that you drill it out to the bottom then just use a tap and cut the rest out... plug up that hole before you do anymore though, you don't want shards of metal getting down in there... cheers, andrew Quote
