Hey everyone,

Someone broke into Nellie (KE30) and busted up my drivers side door lock. Am majorly peeved, but just thankful nothing else was wrecked. (Didn't have a go at the ignition, didn't steal anything, didn't even mess up the interior) Which begs the question, why break in in the first place? There's a club lock which is in plain sight so unless they were going to go to the effort of getting that off...

 

Anyway.

Has anyone replaced the door locks in their car with spares from another, and also the ignition and boot? I currently have 4 keys for my car cos she's a bit Frankenstein after various other break ins... (1 for petrol cap, one for boot, one for ignition/doors) and it'd be nice to cut that number back to the magic One.

 

I called a place in Oakleigh who told me after parts, keying up, and labour it will cost me around $140. Which I guess isn't too bad, but something tells me the God of Street Parking has another break in scheduled for my car sooner or later so was tossing up the wrecker option. (hence seeing if anyone thought it was even worth considering the effort)

removing the door locks, boot and ignition isn't a hard job as you just take the old ones out and fit the 'new' ones. but it is a bit of a fiddly one.

 

taking off window winders, door trims, column shroud. reinstalling ignition barrel and door locks.

 

do it in an hour or so one evening, just make sure you don't do it at your place incase the person that broke in is watching...

If lucky enough find someone else with another rolla wrecking with keys. Swap all of the barrel over except for the ign and have two keys.

 

Fit solex locks and have a different key for the ign.

 

Getting a single key is only possible if you drill out the screw that holds in the ign barrel and replace. (not fun)

yeh i'd considered solex but reading what other members had to say here on rollaclub i thought maybe it wasn't worth it.

if you'd like a different set of locks, fairly sure i have a 4dr set inc boot and ign barrel. possibly even 2 sets.

Ive never had a problem with solex locks. Much better then a door lock that can be opened with a screw driver...

If you buy new door locks, you can get the ignition barrel rekeyed for about 100 bucks to suit your new door keys. Automotive Locksmiths.

Don't buy solex locks, they're useless. I have them in my KE30.

 

Try a place called Peter Robinson Automotive in Carinish Road, Oakleigh South. Call Peter on 9544 1162. He should be able to help you out, he's a good guy and has 4-5 KE30-55's + heaps of spares.

 

Was the place in Oakleigh called Oakleigh Locksmiths? They're pretty good guys there, we deal with them at work.

How would it be any different between a 2 door and a 4 door just wondering. Unless all of a sudden the rear doors have key locks on them aswell?

in the end i took it to the locksmith rather than fooling around with spares and keys and what not

the damage was repairable so they didn't even need to order in new parts. The thieves had broken off a pair of scissors and the locksmith just took that out and rebuilt the barrel. Cost $180 so not too bad i guess.
