PeterLeijen
Hi there, I have a 1980 KE30 which has a locked diff in the back, the problem is locked diffs aren't legal... I have been doing some reading and thanks to rollaclubs help established that the diff in my KE30 is off the banjo type, the drive shaft however doesn't fit on the diff properly. The diff has 50mm center to center on 'top' and 'bottom' of the square mounting plate and 45mm on the 'left' and 'right' side whereas the drive shaft has 50mm center to center spacing on all four sides. As a result only two of the four bolt holes line up. Can anybody tell me if this is a type miss match? (i.e. banjo diff with BW drive shaft?) Also due to legality issues with the locked diff does anybody know whether or not a LiteAce or Hilux diff head will bolt into the KE30 diff housing? And is there any length difference between a 4-speed and 5-speed KE gearbox? i.e. from bell housing to the rear end of the gearbox Regards Peter
styler
you can change pinion plates to suit or driveshafts as far as i know... no way a hiace or hilux head would fit, ever... I'm sure someone can answer you gearbox question, I'm not too sure on k series boxes...
dfunkt
no length difference in k40 and k50 gearboxes. rear flange on the tailshaft is different between jap and BW diffs. these are interchangable.
PeterLeijen
Thanks for the helpful answers!! It's all a learning experience. I will have a hunt around the local wreckers to see if i can find a flange/pinion plate to suit the rest of the setup. what would be the best (most common and cheapest) diff head to mount in a KE diff housing? cheers Peter
corollaart
Hey pete If your looking to upgrade most people go for the t series diff out of ta22 or ra celicas ,some early coronas . Cut and weld leaf spring mounts on bit of stuffing round but good cheap up grade.
PeterLeijen
hey fellas, I've managed to find a cheap 1987 toyota DX wagon, does anybody know it the diff and drive shaft will fit (straight bolt) into my KE30? Would the diff out of the wagon be stronger then the diff out of the KE30? Cheers Peter
Taz_Rx
Hey Peter, The ke70 (DX) diff is slightly bigger than a '30 one so you can't just fit the centre. Also cannot fit the whole diff as the '70 is coil not leaf. Sort of doing an upgrade, just keep searching for a correct banjo ke30 centre, should be too hard to find. Alternatively you could also just swap the whole thing out for a ke55 item which would still be bolt in. If you plan on doing an engine conversion in the near future maybe look at upgrading top a T series or cut down hilux conversion now. ;)
styler
no diffs just "bolt in", especially bigger stronger ones.... your diff is 1355mm wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face, so go from there. at minimuim its going to be cut old mounts off weld them onto new diff, at most mounts, shorten housing, respline axles etc...
