franckcrx Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 hi. After reading a lot of topics (not understanding all of them as i am new in Toyota stuff), and asking a lot of questions, and dismantling 2 rear axles (one of a KE70, the other of a TE71), i still cannot understand why i cannot put coilovers at the rear. I have good prices on complete coilovers set so i wanted to buy one and i cannot see why i cannot. this example is too show the 2 pieces rear coilovers (springs and shocks separated like on the car) as the front will be complete with AE86 struts i am more used on honda so FWD :y: Thanks for your reply :hammer: Quote
SLW42 Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) well if you have pulled the ke70 diff out of the car have a look at the shocky mount man, that maybe 5-8mm wide holder has to support the weight of the whole of the car and deal with all the bumps and crap from everday driving, it may work for a little while till the shocky support bar thing gives in and snaps clean off the diff!!! :y: that is why you cannot just bolt it straight up and drive on it and also the spring rates if there stiffer than stock then that will put more pressure on that bar aswell :y: your 86 front struts will bolt straight in but will have a few dramas there has been afew guys on here that have got coilovers in there car front and rear but you will have to ask them what they did to add more support to the rear Oh and BTW welcome to rollaclub bud :hammer: Edited April 15, 2009 by mr ae71 Quote
Redwarf Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) Gday and welcome. ^^^^^ That's basically it. At the moment, the weight of the car is held on the spring mount. This is the load bearing part of the car. Shock absorbers do exactly that. Absorb shock. The mounts aren't made to be load bearing as such. By removeing the spring, and making a coilover setup, you are transferring all your load to the shock mounts. This is where I disagree with the above post, as I believe you will punch out the top first before breaking the bottom mount. Anyway, coilovers are over rated IMHO. Most people don't touch them once they're setup. You can do the same thing with a good set of shocks and some decent springs. Edit: I see what you're on about. Those platforms on the outside make the spring seats an adjustable height do they? Edited April 15, 2009 by Redwarf Quote
OniBerserker Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 they are two piece rear coilovers yeah. so the outer spring and adjuster will sit in the normal spring mount and you just bolt the shock on that should work man, do you mind if i ask who you can get these rear setups from? Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 they are two piece rear coilovers yeah. Which makes them not coilovers......kinda hard to have coil-over-shock when they are separate Really all you are getting is just height-adjustable springs, and maybe rate-adjustable shocks Quote

Falken_KE30 Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Seems he in france, so would be local products maybe. The kit looks pretty cool though Quote
OniBerserker Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 they are two piece rear "coilovers" yeah. fixed still interested as to where these can be found Quote
aussierider Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 the greddy coil over set up is like that except the front coilovers come complete with stub axles on the front struts. Quote
franckcrx Posted April 16, 2009 Author Report Posted April 16, 2009 Hi. Thanks for the welcome and the replies ;-) Sorry no tto have replied before, the email notification was off. So, if i use a "we are going to call it One Piece coilover" it is not good and i see why (the pressure will be on the shock mounts not on the spring mounts. But the photo i put, are ''we are going to call them 2 pieces coilovers" so there is a shock in place of a shock and the coilover springs at the original spring place. SO I CAN :jamie: ? The product shown is the product of a friend you did his brand some 2 years ago and i use the coilovers on my Racing cars ;-) I can give you his contact if anyone wants For the front, is it better to get "to weld coilovers" or i can get like the Greddy ones ? as i do have AE86 stuff here and i believe that i have to change the steering arms of AE86 no ? I have some of a 1.6 TE71 Hatch SR5. Would it be good instead of the AE86 ? Thanks Quote
eiriksmil Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) the greddy coil over set up is like that except the front coilovers come complete with stub axles on the front struts. I think the Megan Racings are like that as well, probably some more. That's the way you often do it when you have separated springs & shocks, you keep them separate. I wonder how low they go, dropped GReddy a mail weeks ago but didn't hear anything. Gonna try Enjuku as they stock em, unless anyone here has experience with them? EDIT: Maybe the ones in the first post indeed are MRs.. Ignore my previous statement then.. :jamie: Edited April 16, 2009 by eiriksmil Quote

franckcrx Posted April 17, 2009 Author Report Posted April 17, 2009 Thanks for your replies ;-) I asked this questions since 2 months on other forums, nobody could give a reply and here, hop in one day  Thanks a lot :jamie: For the front, is it better to get "to weld coilovers" or i can get like the Greddy ones ? as i do NOT have AE86 stuff here and i believe that i have to change the steering arms of AE86 no ?I have some of a 1.6 TE71 Hatch SR5. franckcrx Posted April 17, 2009 Author Report Posted April 17, 2009 the contact for the above coilovers : [email protected] He has for a lot of cars, as well as some others things :jamie: Quote
aussierider Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 The last place i saw stocking Greddy coil overs was infinite motor sport on ae86drivingclub.com.au, I'm pretty sure you can run them on your ke all you need is a set ae86 steering arms an it should all bolt straight. The Greddy ones are nicer then weld on kit because your not running an old fatigued stub axle which would be a good thing if your planning on running low offset wheels an bigger brakes in the future.
