TheGhost Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 hey guys. had a few new hiluxs come through my work recently and i thought about maybe looking into the engine out of one. 2TR-FE, 2.7L 4 cylinder. not sure if diesel or petrol. thought i new torquey motor would go nicely into a KE70/AE71 any thought and more information? cheers guys Quote
OniBerserker Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 The 2TR-FE is a 2.7L I4 gasoline engine. It features DOHC, 16 valves and VVT-i . Its power is 159 hp (119 kW) @ 5200 rpm, and 180 lbf·ft (244 N·m) of torque @ 3800 rpm. it will probably be expensive to pick one of these engines up, because of how new they are. Quote
Sam_Q Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_TR_engine I am guessing this is where you picked your figured from though Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_TR_engine I am guessing this is where you picked your figured from though The older Hilux motors are becoming a popular choice for high boost builds - 2rz or 3rz. I'm not too up on these new ones. I dare say getting one for under 6k or so will be impossible until the new hiluxs have been around for at least ten years. Probably a pretty good motor though. Does it have balance shafts? I dare say it does, as a lot of larger capacity inline 4 Toyota motors will, and they will make more hp with them removed, but shake like Michael J Fox at idle. Quote

TheGhost Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 there are also the older 2.7L toyota engines but i thought the use of vvt-i would be fun... just throwing it out there and seeing what people thought.... or my other thought was a 3SGE beams motor but they are also quite pricey.... Well, without being really familiar with the motor, Ill do my best. Pros: Its already rwd, so getting a box and clutch sorted is easy. Ditto with the cooling system and manifolds. Cons: Might be heavy (untested theory) compared to other newer toyota motors if its a steel block and that high in capacity, as most new gen motors are alloy now. The gearbox will probably mean you need to mod the tunnel. Will be set up for lumps of toque so will be exciting but not super sporty feeling without more revs. Will need an uprated diff (which is a good upgrade to do). I think the next step is to get your hands physically on one and measure up the engine and box to see how it fits, what the sump looks like, if anything fouls the steering, where the shifter will sit in the car, how much it weighs, if its too tall, too long or too wide, how the cooling system looks, whether the manifolds fit etc. Once you've done all that and crossed your ts and dotted your Is' you may have a plan, or you may have realised its fraught with difficulty. At the bare minimum, you will be massaging the firewall and trans tunnel, making crossmembers and mounts, and you may as well get the diff from the lux to complete the toughest driveline around. Will be very expensive to fit, however, Id allow up to a grand to shorten and reweld the mounts to suit your own car. Id be most worried about the tunnel clearance and the height of the thing, as a lot of toyota inline 4s are tall nowadays. They get slanted over frequently in new cars. Quote
curly Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 From what i,ve heard they are a weak engine, thats why everyone turbos the 3RZ, it will fit without firewall or tunnel mods, sump will have to be modded ( prick of a job ) vvti is just harder with tuning, mounts are easy just check my build Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 LRS seems to have given you all of the tech info you really need at this stage, so I'll give you my opinion of the motor as that would be the same engine that I have in my Hiace work van. I keep thinking to myself when driving it lately that one of these engine would be great in a daily driven/weekend fun car. If you wanted to buld a more serious drift/track day car then I'd look at something else, but for what they are (a industrial engine) they really are quite good. Have good torque from the big capacity, although this would limit the top end a bit hence the 5200rpm peak power. They do however get up an mumbo once the VVTi kick in (which is very noticable - mostly in the way it roars!), but don't be thinking the variable valve timing is going to get you 9000rpm like a honda..... remember its is an industrial engine. I think one of the other things that makes me like it more (and I can't believe I'm saying this) is actually the auto gearbox!! Toyota obviously spend a lot of time perfecting this and it shows. Ratios are well set up (about 50kmh in first, 110kmh in second, and third keeps going to around 150'ish!), shifts are almost un-noticably smooth and just the way in which the shifter is set up tops it off. Its bloody quick for a work van. I been playing in the slip-lanes in Hobart lately with it hehe, last week I only just got beaten by an NA silvia, but that was probably only casue I had 3/4 of a tonne in the back!! :y: Also gotta be a bit careful in the wet with it. most of the time in first gear (with the back empty) it will light up when VVTi kicks in. Actually Yesterday just as it started raining I floored it in first and it didn't spin, but then it shifted to 2nd, lit up and sent me down the road sideways!! So yeah, would be good in a "fun to drive daily" like KE, but if you want to go more serious then look elsewhere. Might also be worth visiting some aution yards to try and find a written off Hiace or Lux, I dare say this would be the cheapest way yuou're going to get one, and you'll also get the ECU etc as well as a gearbox and diff.
