Ok, here it is, I have purchased a 5K for my rolla, I noticed that there were 3 wires poking out the side of the dizzy, this made me pop it open to have a look, inside the dizzy there is a flat black disk with little slots in it, I assume that this is an "electric dizzy" as I saw something kinda similar recently......

Now, the problem, my understanding is that I need an "ignitor box" to make the car run, so I went and had a good look about for one, but to no avail......

However I found several on other (admittedly bigger engined) cars, all with an "Ignitor 31" sticker on them, would these be usable on the 5K?

Nippon Denso Electronic Type

These a mainly found on jap import motors.

There are 2 types, 5K internal ignitor and 4K external ignitor. The internal ignitor dizzy, just needs to be connected to an appropriate electronic coil. The external type needs an ignitor to fire the coil. Ignitors from Mazda RX7s and Mitsubishi Scorpions can be utilized with the external dizzy. The late KR series Townace van also have electronic distributors. The 7KC(carby) comes with the internal igniter type where the 7KE(injection) comes with the external type and also has a screw on distributor cap.

Due to my complete ignorance of electrics, I take this to mean that I can hook up the engine as I normally would, as the 5K already has an ignitor built into it, but what do I do with those 3 wires hanging from the dizzy? Surely they do something.......

Can someone straighten this out for me in as simple a way as possible please?

My other option is to rip the dizzy out and get the auto sparky to see if he can make it work with some other ignitor..... He said something about a Bosch ignitor that *may* work, but I'm hoping for something a little more solid from someone here with previous experience......

Cheers guys.

yeah, could use the generic bosh ignitor, but i'd stick with denso as they are better than the bosch shit..

So mine would be an externally ignited one then? My problem is that I don't have a Denso ignitor........ Um, so a bosch will do as a temporary fix?

And Another thing, I've seen something about changing the coil from the one that requires a ballast resistor (the long round one) to the other one (rounded off triangle one)..... technical terms I'm sure.....

Is that necessary?

5k.... schweet!!

You want me to come round and have a look at it for you mate?

I'll explain the basics of ignitors to you as I can't be bothered typing it. They're pretty much just a fast switching earthing relay.

"Nippon Denso Electronic Type

Except you can also get 4KEU internal igniter ones (I had one on my KE55)

Do you know what they look lik inside Hiro??? Do the have the disc Ben has decribed or a "4 pointed" shaft like my external ignitor type?

Given the "disc with slots in it" and the fact it has 3x wires it sort of sounds more like a CAS than an electric dizzy to me!!!! I have a custom made K series CAS at home.
