Evan G Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 ive got a ke70 5speed, i want to change the input oil seal. but for some reason the front cover only moves out 1cm? please check out the images they are labeled of what I'm trying to remove also pic of a blown turbo thanks people Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 Actually, I'd love a "how-to" for a complete 5speed strip. I got as far as you when I was trying to get the idler shaft out Evan. I couldn't get the idler shaft out the front because of the cast iron sealcover/thrust brg carrier bit, and I couldn't get that off as it seemed to carry the input shaft.... So it still makes a noise in every gear except 4th... :P Anyone done a complete strip?? Quote
Evan G Posted August 17, 2009 Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 i love in the book it doesnt tell you how to disassemble it. it just says "it requires advanced knowlage" :P anyone please helpppp. TAZ_RX WHERE ARE YOU? Quote
Trev Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 Rebuilt my T50 and the front seal cover came straight off, try pulling it harder. Quote
Evan G Posted August 18, 2009 Author Report Posted August 18, 2009 i took it to a gearbox place they said it should come off, i had to remove the gearset (peice of piss) and there was a huge circlip holding the bearing to the housing, luckyyyy i insisted to change the input oilseal . unpon inspection the front bearing was SHOT lucky i didnt give up or it would of had a HUGE whine to in it :) Quote
Evan G Posted August 19, 2009 Author Report Posted August 19, 2009 ive got it all stripped but i can't get the main gear set out cause the forks are in the way? (ball bearings are out) any ideas? ill take some pics when I'm putting it back to geather and do a step by step cheers Quote
Taz_Rx Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) Good luck!!! :y: Gearboxes aren't an easy thing to work on. I built 1x good K40 out of 2x farked ones once a few years back. Took me hours and hours and hours and its not something I'm overly keen on doing again..... hence the fact I haven't done a K50. With the K40 anyway, most of it had to come in and out through the back of the box. You don't need to remove the forks, you just need to dissasemble it in the correct way. You also need to be REALLY carefull when removing the main gear set where they slide over the syncros. Move then too far and you have 3x little locators pop out as well as a couple of circlips and then you in for a world of greif re-assembling each of those. My suggestion - fork out the couple of hundred dollars to have it done proffessionally. That way it should also have a waranty and you might have some hair left at the end of it!!! :) Edited August 19, 2009 by Taz_Rx Quote
seabiscuit Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) I agree with Taz. Unless you plan on reco'ing gearboxes fairly often, I'd suggest taking it to the people with that "advanced knowledge" to do it for you. When I was doing Automotive class in College last year we got to pull a shot gearbox apart and put it back together. He happened to have a K40 box there so I grabbed it and rebuilt it. Even though about 10 of the 15 people in the class were rebuilding FWD gearboxes, I'd have a guess that only 2 people got their gearboxes back together and semi-working (as they were already broken gearboxes). This was over the time span of about 2.5 hours of class time per week for 10 weeks. Edited August 19, 2009 by seabiscuit Quote

Fun to try and re-assemble hey!? :y: Advance Knowledge is one thing...... advanced experience is a whole nother story! :) Quote
Evan G Posted August 19, 2009 Author Report Posted August 19, 2009 our workshop got 30 people but the gearbox KING (rebuilding diffs and gearboxs for 30 years) isnt here this month :) i got it all 90% stripped but the 3rd gear selector shaft wont come back all the way so i can take out the fork. spring and ball bearing retainers are out and the other one on the side of the gearbox I'm stumpd :y: Quote
Taz_Rx Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 You need to split up the main gear set shaft to get it out past the forks. Quote
seabiscuit Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 So you know what '3x little locators and 2x circlips' I'm talking about? Yea, absolute agony! I think it took me about 2 hours to do this since mine dropped out about 3 or 4 times. Each time it happened I got the shits and hit something with a hammer, which made me feel better. The feeling I got when I put the last few bolts in and turned the output shaft and it worked was awesome though! Quote
Evan G Posted August 19, 2009 Author Report Posted August 19, 2009 GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. i think ill put it back together (just wanted to change the bearing/nothing wrong with it) front bearing was pitted got input/output seals and gasket goo to seal it all up? Quote
