before going for that engine I would probably go for a qr25de with stronger rods and aftermarket pistons. But I am not into low reving engines, I like the idea of having the sr20 crank in it to have a 2.1L thats much lighter and better flowing than an SR20.

not sure what u were looking at, but inside an sr20 is nothing like a ka24de

has shown itself as nissans' monster of a 4cyl, over this way = lotsa torque

ka24 block is cast iron. On the business end.... cams r direct acting(no rocker arms)

 

For daily use, a KA torque actually makes it a pleasant drive... and it can be quiet. Unlike those noisy small displacement high revvers, annoying exhaust & induction noise and having to rev the piss outta it to get any grunt. Lotsa shifting, short gears too. KA is a different animal.

 

Just because KA makes more torque lower to midrange, dosen't mean it won't rev/pull past 7000... thing is, no need to.

KA has posted ridiculous street and drag ETs, especially considering the mods used.

High mileage KAs done well over 400hp atw + a robust 400+ft-lbs tq, std innards.

Enough to pee-ur-pants in street rolla.

Over 500hp & tire-shredding 550+ ft-lbs tq, std head/cam/intake, only piston/rods added.

"Truck" motor or not, KA can be deadly

 

Dunno what RZ can do on std innards, but I suspect similar potential, if ya wanna keep a rolla all toyota. There was a nice 2RZ powered street rolla detailed on 3tc.com - pistons/rods/std head & cam. At 26psi went 9.8sec. Got an amazing 37mpg too! That is what 'truck torque' can do 4 u :)

RZ engines can (when worked) produce a crap-load of power. Take a look at the 3RZ turbo KE wagon on here.

 

Good thing about "truck" engines is that they tend to have quite strong blocks :-)

I have been thinking wouldnt the trans tunnel need to be chopped to fit a CA type gearbox into an early corolla?

^^^ yes...and no.

 

Alot of people choose to hang the gearbox lower to make it clear,

it points your engine and everything up in the front a bit, but this is how the majority of conversions are done.

 

The other option is to mod the tunnel to suit, which includes the brace the front of the seats sits on.

 

Yet another option is a bluebird series 3 gearbox, a much shorter design, but weaker also,

this is a popular option with the datto boys.

yeah ok thanks for the info, I was going to use my ke70 as a basis for the mounts and i am guessing that it has more room under it. So this bluebird box does it have the same mount?

only thing i had to do to my ae71 to fit the ca box was cut the tunnel back a bit more to fit the shifter through... no clearance issues in the tunnel whatsoever

Not sure, they are pretty hard to get hold so i have only seen photos, i dare say they are a different mount.

yeah I figured that, I was under the impression though the earlier corollas have a smaller tunnel again.
