chappo12 Posted February 13, 2010 Author Report Posted February 13, 2010 home* oh and if you have any pics of your track car i would love to see them NO DRIFT CARS PLEASE Quote
altezzaclub Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Guy I used to work for (Jamie Aislabie) used to race sports cars. He built three or four over 20years, it was pretty much a free formula class, and they were basically just a wider version of the Elfin. If you can get it through scrutiny you can race it I'm sure. This guy will know! http://billzilla.org/rcar.htm Quote
hugh88kw Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 you would be looking at formule libra or formule vee ,but go to CAMS web site.not as easy as you think unless you have metal working skills,Ihave worked on ELFIN 620B F/FORD Quote
philbey Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Yeh I've thought about this too, I'd love to get an elfin but given they're probably worth a bomb I'll probably just design and build one myself, put my degree to good use. my mate's also been telling me that we should build a Belly tanker though so we'll see how we go! madKE35coupe Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 i guess it all comes down to the rules of the class you want to compete in? as long as you build to the specifications you should be ok Quote
chappo12 Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 altezza how cool is his 2nd car the la mans style one thats what i wanna build that is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
altezzaclub Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 If you're a good fabrication engineer there's no reason why not. The alternative is to buy either an old one and modify it, or buy a bent one and fix it! A mate of mine picked up a slightly bent Formulae 3 car years ago for bugger all, I think its still in a farm shed in Hamilton somewhere. Billzilla's led an amazing life and his work is always so thorough. Quote
irokin Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 You could always buy an older formula ford chassis and go about modifying it with aerodynamics and a bigger engine. That way you're not battling with suspension geometrys and there's gallons of spares available. Some not too expensive chassis on my105: http://my105.com/default3.asp?id=526 philbey that thing must get wicked light at high speed. Curved top and flat bottom? Sounds like... A wing! Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 IIRC Elfin DIY kits are around $15K - no motor or box etc.. Buying a built one is more like $40-50K Quote
philbey Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 yeh that's a pretty famous salt lake racer from So Cal speed shop. Dudes were buying the fuel drop tanks from P-51 mustangs and other WW2 fighters and using them as the body, they figured USAF engineers probably knew how to make low drag shapes! Quote
