Well guess what... I found a 3lt hilux surf at a caryard in my price range. It's done 233xxx kms, 5 speed manual. Took it for a test drive and everything seemed alright. The only problem is I can't get the loan yet because I'm not 18 til the 26th of this month, but I think that if I do some sweet talking I may be able to put a deposit on it and they can hold it for me til I get the loan. Is there anything that I should look at before I put a deposit on it?

Cheers

Jason

The 2LTE has gotta be one of the worst engines Toyota made. The older, mechanical injected 2LT is infinitely better. Replaceable cyl liners, nitrate hardened crankshafts and bigger rods, main journals, and oil injection under the piston skirts... Mine was running close to 100kw on stock internals and epic boost levels. That said, the KZ (3.0) are light years better than both. MUCH more useable torque.

And its only usually the automatics that overheat... Radiator, double row a/c condenser, oil cooler and A/T cooler all shoved up front + Australian heat = Fail

I flogged the absolute pisser out of my LN61 on and off road, low range crawling, towing, down the beach... all up here in the sweltering tropics on a stock radiator and never managed to cook it.

Moral of the story is don't buy an automatic LN130 Surf... But a manual KZN130 should be relatively safe.

Awesome cheers guys. I'll be headin to the caryard after work with my dad. He's very mechanically minded so he'll know some stuff to look out for. Hopefully we'll be able to work out a deal...

I own a 95 surf 3 litre turbo its the best truck ever, only problems i have had is the radiator shit itself and a mates one blocked up the radiator and did the head gasket so might pay to rip the radiator out and get it cleaned/recored.

All in all great trucks.

Ok, so I went to the caryard yesterday and me and my dad gave it a thorough going over. And other than a very slight crack in the exhaust manifold, and needing a couple of new tyres, all was good, so i put a deposit on it. The timing belt had been replaced at 170xxx kms. Got for a very cool price of $6500.

Oh, and for those of you playing at home, it's a 1994 KZN130, imported in 98. Getting the keys at the end of this month, subject to me getting the finance. Very unlikely that I'll have a problem with that. Cheers for everyones help.

6500 is pretty damn good.

If you're getting a new manifold, may I suggest getting a dump pipe made up while you're there. Makes a WORLD of difference. Instant spool up, mountains more torque.

4x4 that chirps 2nd = win :P
