i want to put more diff oil in my ke38 as its sounds like its got none..

 

where do i put it in? :hmm: and how much do i put in?

 

i realize this might not solve the problem but its worth a try

Regardless of weather you have a Banjo (jap) or Borg warner (ADM) diff they'll both have a filler plug on the back of the diff. With the car sitting level fill with DIFF OIL (not lsd oil) through this hole until it starts to dribble back out. Small 1lt diff oil bottle will normally have a pull out nozzle in them to make the job a bit easier or you could get yourself one of these to make like even easier.

Useless info - I bought one of the bottle pumps for $20. Reason is because now I can buy 4L bottles without the pull out nozzle. 1l = $10'ish, 4lt = $25'ish, you do the math. :yes:

Also if you do get one of the pumps, they're heaps easier to use when the oil is warn and thinner. Just sit the bottle of oil in a bucket/tub of hot water for half an hour or so before using it. >|

hmmm.. its made a whining noise since i bought it, a mate said wheel bearings.. but its gotten a lot worse so i thought maybe no oil in the diff as well.

 

Ive been meaning to go to toyoland to get a new diff drum to drum.. but its probably to far to go in the rolla, might have to get a mate to take me.

 

whats the worse that can happen if i keep on driving it? i am treating it like a grandma too

Topping up your diff oil wont work if the other 90% in there is shit. Pop the diff cover off and drain it all then top it up. Mine was making heaps of noise and when i drained it it came out like treacle. Might be the same with yours, you've just diluted it a bit. Worth a try anyway.

 

But like you've said its getting worse and worse so could be something else...

 

And thats the 2nd time my local car supply place has screwed me. Only reason I went back is that I got a voucher. Does the LSD oil have a totally different viscosity?

 

Oh and about the oil pump... a bit of rubber hose and a plastic bottle works sweet if its air tight, just put a rush hole in the side like a bong to let air back in... :yes: cost $0. But thats cos I had to make do. Worked sweet though.

Wheel bearing most likely will whine pretty constant. Diff will whine different at different load/speed/rpm.

it gets louder the faster you go.. once your at 60 its pretty loud, i don't go any faster.

I work for toyota and we use LSD oil for everything, transfer case oil, non LSD's. So it can't be too bad.

deffinetely rear wheel bearing. Mine does the exact same thing. Either buy a radio and turn it up :( or replace them.

Or just buy some panadol for your headaches and drive it hard :P

So are axle bearings different to wheel bearings? cause my rear end is starting to make noise and was just going to do the diff oil and the wheel bearings

lsd oil is a gl6 grade (obsolete) whereas diff or manual trans oil is a gl5. the difference is the level of shear loading and abuse the oil will put up with, gl6 will put up with more.

 

the thing to be careful of is that EP (extreme pressure oils) have sulfur additives which do not agree with brass, so they will cause problems eventually for your syncrhoniser rings in your gearbox, but they will be fine for your diff...

 

I use LSD oil if I'm on a budget, it is cheaper than the same brand gear/diff oil.

 

I'm using atf in the gearbox at the moment anyway.
