Nitephyre Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 niggling things here and there, but the main one that's pissing me off is it's stalling on me when i put it into reverse. it's a real bitch when i'm having to do those 10 point turns in these ʇ~~ɔy little streets around where i live while working. i've checked the timing, it seems to be alright.. it is tending to idle roughly atm but i don't know what could be causing it. i'm no efi wizard etc so i'm stuck with what it could be.. cheers, matt :D Quote
demuire Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 You'd generally only get an error code from the ECU if the check engine light has come on. Quote
demuire Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 Do they even have a check engine light Good point :D I want a Celsior =) Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 i would be entertaining the idea that the century's engine is getting on 20 years old, running on crapper fuel here than it was ever intended to in japan, and can no longer maintain stock idle speed against the load of the highest transmission gear (reverse) against the torque converter my bimmer was of similar vintage, and whenever i got it serviced, the mechanic would put it down to stock idle speed (750rpm or something) and it was a constantly-stalling piece of crap, even just clutching in at an intersection was enough to conk it out. i'd raise the stopper screw up till it sat on 950rpm and it never missed a beat so perhaps just try raising the idle a couple hundred rpm? Super Jamie Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 (edited) really? hmm, my bimmer had mechanical injection (another shitty bosch product) you could always try wedging something in the throttle stop just to see if i'm right, then either bend things to adjust it, or epoxy a washer in its place could also be the gearbox is worn, or the converter. try changing the trans fluid i'm one to exhaust all possible avenues of self-service torubleshooting before giving my money to a mechanic who'll just do them anyway and it might not fix a thing Edited July 25, 2005 by Super Jamie Quote
demuire Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 EFI != Idle Screw Not true, both my Corolla and my Camry have an idle screw. Quote
demuire Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 If there is one, it'll be on the throttle body. Actually, my sister-in-law's Honda Civic also has one, as does my Satria GTi, as did my Lancer GSR. So chances are, it has an idle control screw :D Quote
Nitephyre Posted July 25, 2005 Author Report Posted July 25, 2005 (edited) it's got good ol toyota/denso efi etc idle control screw eh, hmm i might see if i've got one as for the codes, it's got the supermonitor, and it's flashing up codes, but i've no idea what they mean, can't find much info on the net... ok so here's a call to mr. matt or mr. warwick.. could you identify my codes? and nick, i so want my small chuckable car again as well, but it needs a crapload of stuff done to it and i've not the money atm to do it.. the whole vicious circle thing y'know? :D Edited July 25, 2005 by NiteP]-[yRe Quote
Nitephyre Posted July 25, 2005 Author Report Posted July 25, 2005 (edited) new instrument cluster, something in the electrics is screwed (none of the lights working etc.. fuses ok) rust that needs fixing, suspension bushes etc.. and thats just the stuff i can see.. sure, it's all fixable, but unfortunately it has to wait until i've got another FT job, as i'm spending $50 per week or so.. it's not that bad.. but i still don't have the outlay money atm for rolla :D aanyhoo.. the C is mainly idling low when i select reverse.. sometimes it will stall, others it goes to stall then regains when i touch the loud pedal.. The error codes (for those that can help) are DIAG-06 and EFI-51 ah, i love cars =) Edited July 25, 2005 by NiteP]-[yRe Quote
Super Jamie Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 try the throttle stop thing. if it doesn't have an adjustment screw, tape a 5 cent coin to the stop and see how you go. it will take like 30 seconds :D Quote
TRD ke70 Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 whats the build date on the car?? most of toyota's codes are the same through the ranges. i'd be thinking it's the IAC(idle air control) could allso be the engine temp sensor for the computer. code 51 has to do with the A/C. i'd reset the codes first just to make sure that it's not from pass events. this is done by removing the EFI fuse under the bonnet for about 30 seconds and then refitting it. then check the codes again. if you still have problems let me know. Quote
Nitephyre Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 (edited) Dec '85 and it's Nippon Denso efi if that helps i've removed fuses but it hasn't cleared the codes.. but i'll try it again.. i've got a few problems with the a/c but i know about those so heh cheers :D Edited July 26, 2005 by NiteP]-[yRe Quote
Raven Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Throttle Position Sensor is a possibility, also any vacuum leaks would be a cause too. Worth a look. Quote
TRD ke70 Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 (edited) -[yRe,Jul 25 2005, 09:08 PM] The error codes (for those that can help) are DIAG-06 and EFI-51 what's this code from?? DIAG-06 code 51 is from the A/C load circuit and is nothing to worry about. Edited July 26, 2005 by TRD ke70 Quote
Nitephyre Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 from my SuperMonitor display on the dashboard  it flashes up all the codes, i've had a bunch of different ones come and go, mainly a/c and door ones, but they're no big deal... so, if 51 is a/c loading, why does it say EFI in front.. maybe it's a different set of codes for the century, and i can't find a list etc on the intarwebs and after more testing, i've confirmed it's only doing the stall thing when in reverse, so i'm thinking it *could* be something gearboxy unfortunately... although, you know that's got me thinking about certain W5*'s and the words "sourcing a bellhousing" and "conversion" :o am i evil? yes i am! :jamie: Quote
