Hey guys the stock speedo is really quite awful in my ke20 and i want something a little bit more fancy and bright cos i cannot see it at all in the dark... its also out massivly and i never know what speed I'm doing, so I'm thinking of ripping out the old one and putting a new one in it and getting it all re-calibrated.

Now the big question is, as these cars are so old would the wiring stop me from putting an aftermarker speedo in?

Aftermarket speedo aren't an easy conversion. If you struggle to see it at night I suggest maybe trying to retro fit some LED in the orginal cluster for more light. If you're still not happy with it, then maybe look at the aftermarket speedo.

yea thats what i though, well at the moment iv lost all lights to my dash so will take it to an auto elec once the engine is fixed and get them to upgrade the lighting...

whats involved for an aftermarket speedo?

There's a couple of ways of doing it, i found this not so long ago http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?s...638#entry431420 which tells you a far bit. Another way of doing it is getting a hall effect type sensor of another car and retro fitting to your speedo cable much like that link. Or you can put magnets on the prop shaft and get a speedo calibration system to get the correct speed...all of these are a bit complicated. The easiest way is taking it to a guage specialist and have them look at it.

I had a KE70 for a while in which I had trouble seeing the speedo at night... turns out the lights behind the dash had been dimmed right down.

Also on my KE55 at one point the wire into the dimmer switch was disconnected and caused the lights to stop working...

You could check on both of those things to see if that gets the lights working again or helps.

I replaced the globes in my gauge cluster and it came up more brighter.

They might have been a slighter higher wattage. Or the original ones were just old and dim (30+ years old).
