Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Hey all Later on down the track i would like to upgrade to some nice wheels. Could some 1 shed some light on how the wheels systems work - When people say 13" wheels - i know thats the size of mine. What would i say if i wanted much thicker 13" wheels? What would i say if i wanted wheels that are larger over-all? I would like Mag Wheels like this for my car... Teddys Future Mag Wheels Because my car has 13" wheels, can i put 14/15/16/17" wheels straight on? if not, what do i have to do to make them fit? Thanks every one! Teddy Quote
irokin Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Just make sure you get the right offset so it clears the strut. If you want wider wheels ask for wider wheels don't go much more than 7-9 inches wide... What would i say if i wanted wheels with more mag and less rubber? (low profile): get bigger rims (say 15s) and then the tyre size would be like 195/40R15. There are sites out there that explain all this...go have a look. Quote
Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 what would i search for? - this is one topic where i wouldnt know what word to type in to get what I'm looking for ! Quote
Ruts Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 There are 4 basic measureemnts you need to concern yourself with Wheel Diameter which is in inches :: 13, 14, etc Tyre Tread Width which is in millimeters :: 185, 195, 205 etc Tyre Profile which is a % of the tread width :: 35, 50 etc Rolling Distance (RD) which is the distance around the outside of the tyre. This one is very important cause if it changes your speedo will be out. Use the proggy below to check your current RD and then play with wheel and profile sizes and see what you can come up with. tyre.exe Quote
Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 Could you explain a little about the tyre profile - how can i measure it on my car? With the tyre tread - is it "the more the merrier" ? - For example 15 inch ROH Reflex wheels , with 205/50R15 Kelly Charger tyres So.. the 15 Inch is the Wheel Diam the 205 is the tyre tred width and the tyre profile is the 50 - still confused about what this acutally is! thanks for sticking with me wile I'm slowly learning ! demuire Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Umm, the measurements Ruts supplied relate to the tyres, with rims the measurements you'll need are: diameter in inches (obviously have to match the tyre) width (have to be appropriate for tyre as well) offset (either measured as offset or inset) Here are some links: http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html Quote
demuire Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Teddy: Your tire profile will be stamped on your tyre. Eg 205/50R15. No it is not the "more the merrier", you have to get something to suit your car. More rubber does not necessarily mean more grip. Generally for a KE70 I don't think you'd want to go more than a 205 or 215. I use 185 tyres on my KE55, I wouldn't go more than 195. With your example of 205/50R15: 15 inch wheel Thread width 205mm Sidewall height 50% of 205mm - 102.5mm Quote
Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 ok cool thanks for that! When it comes to buying tyres - what should you look for? are there any tips i should know? Quote
demuire Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Buy a good tyre. What is a good tyre? Too hard to explain. You mostly find out either from experience, from other people's experiences or from reviews. Generally (but not always) price is also a good indication. Quote
Xany Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 i have simex ones on the front of mine and olympic on the back ( the back ones were on it when i got the car)....i wouldnt buy olympic for the simple fact that they kinda don't grip in the wet too well.....however i can't fault the simex ones. Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 fook what brand do u like / have had good results with? any 1 else? Quote
irokin Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 don't touch silverstone...theyre crap...very bad in the wet. Quote
demuire Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Among tires I've used: Falken Azenis RS - brilliant. absolutely brilliant. Not fantastic in the wet, and definately not great in the wear department, but stick like shit to a blanket in the dry. Falken ZE326 - shite for the price Simex SM6000 - not bad, soft sidewalls Riken Maystorm - very good for the money. Currently on the back of Pinky Firestone Firehawk SZ50 - very good for the money. A bit squeely. Currently on the front of Pinky. Bridgestone RE88 - motorkhana special (no grip, last forever), probably doesn't help that they're quite old Roadchamp - need I say more? Dunlop FM901 - very nice... Pirelli P6000 - rather good in the wet, rather average everywhere else Kumho Ecsta 712 - very nice... Bridgestone Potenza S02 - very nice, a bit expensive Bridgestone Potenza S03 - again very nice, again a bit expensive Michelin Pilot Sports - very nice, a bit squeely. Currently on the Satria GTi That's all I can remember for now... Quote
Teddy Posted February 3, 2004 Author Report Posted February 3, 2004 wow... ! Were there any that stood out for you, that you would recomend getting again? Quote
demuire Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Here's a hint: The ones with positive words like "brilliant", "nice", "good" :D If it's any help at all, I'll probably be getting some SZ50's for the AE35 to drive around on, simply because I think they're very good value for money, and I have no money at the moment. The squeeling is annoying though. Which sort of tempts me to get Maystorms instead, but I'm not sure. For trackwork I'd love to get some "better" tyres like Azenis RS or A032R's or something, but that'll have to wait for a bit. Quote
