Hey, I'm looking at taking long holidays and seeing some of Australia by road. Ive been looking at some diesel 4x4s under $3000 found some old cruiser wagons and a couple of petrol troopys for around $5000 but would prefer a diesel.

The main 3 Ive been looking at is a HJ45 troopy for $2000, mechanic owner for the last 20 years with new glow plugs and clutch mast cyl, I know it would probably need more done too it but I can get all parts at trade price and rust doesn't really bother me as I can do that myself as well.

1988 TD pajero, needs 2 tyres body work and is auto, but only has 122000kms though. For $1400, also probably needs work.

And a diesel 1982 patrol, new clutch, ps pump rebuilt, new radiator, new wheels and tyres, 298000kms. $1600, once again probably needs work. Also had the same owner for the last 15 years.

What I would like to know is the good and bad points about these 3 cars, I'm pretty keen on the troopy because of the extra room in the back for stuff. Not too keen on the bitsamissin cause.... well I don't really know just never been keen on Mitsubishi's.

I drove a HJ75, 2H around Australia. 20,000 ks with no probs.

But like all cars they do need maintenance and things can break. And parts aren't exactly cheap.

A well sorted one will go forever. And when you get beyond the cities you realise....this is TOYOTA country. A mate working at a 4wd workshop in broome told me about a massive rack for 'cruiser parts, and almost nothing for Patrols. He had a Patrol.

The others....You get what you pay for.

The bad with the trooper.....IT IS SLOW and the ride can be a little rough.

So I vote for the TOYOTA

Ye the one I am looking at is even older. Is yours petrol or diesel? cause ive seen a couple for about 4000 on gas.

2H = Non turbo Diesel.

2F = Petrol, more power, more fuel.

ye, the one I had a look at was petrol on gas, was the one you have petrol or diesel? if petrol how did it go on fuel?

I have the 2H diesel.

The engine choice depends on where you want to go. If your going to hit the desert, some remote places only have diesel.

You see petrol at most places along bitumen, but get out the back of NW QLD and beyond and LPG is not very common.

If you're going to head into cape york, petrol engines won't do. Anywhere you do a river crossing and the water comes up to the dizzy = fail.

I bought a diesel because I never wanted to find out there were places I couldn't go because my car won't cut it. I have 190 litre duel tanks.

Depending on load and driving style (not hard 4wding) I can get up to 1400 ks out of two tanks. But when diesel is 1.80 a litre, you can spend the price of a 'rolla at the petrol station.

Those 4 cent off, plus another 4 cents discount supermarket servos start paying off over 120 litres.

Servicing on a diesel is simpiler as well. A well sorted diesel just needs oil changes. No messing with ignition stuff in the middle of nowhere.

Diesel for sure mate. A lot of the outback fuel stops are not allowed to carry or sell unleaded because of the indigenous petrol sniffing problem. (no crap) Definately not gas, you won`t be able to buy the stuff except in major towns etc.

Toyota before Nissan for parts reasons only and avoid Itchymickies like the plague. They are not an off road vehicle in any sense of the words.

I drive Landcruiser but have owned Nissan and my choice is Landcruiser by far for reliability and availability of after market parts.

Enjoy your trip mate. Cheers.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but for 2-3k in a diesel 4x4 all your going to buy is problems (unless your lucky or get mates rates). and if your going to remote pleaces in australia, the last thing you want is unreliability.

old shit like xJ4X series will make you wanna shoot yourself on a long trip. so slow and rough!!

try to find a MK-GQ patrol. they are MUCH nicer inside than an early cruiser, and basically missile proof.

also look for a bundera / mwb cruiser, early hilux, 4 runner, pathfinder etc.

its probably a bit far for you. but near me theres an mk LWB turbo diesel in reasonable nick. $2.5k. seriously cheap for what it is!

don't rule out a petrol car. they are cheaper than equivilent diesels, are a fair bit nicer to drive than old diesels, and easier to repair if something goes wrong. the money you save can go towards the extra fuel it will use over the diesel. if you use your head they can easily be waterproofed too.

If it has rego I could just drive it back to brissy. Also what about that 94 cruiser I put a link to?

My dads more or less in the same boat - wants to take a trip around the oversized island. Knows a diesel is the way to go and i'm trying to convince him to steer away from his choices of either a patrol or a rodeo dual cab and on to a toyota either cruiser or hi-lux but....

It sounds like you need to start hitting up some of the 4wd forums.

http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ <- is a pretty good one. Aussie too

Thing about looking for this stuff, you gotta travel.

I got mine from Mildura, 700 ks from where I live.

Being inland, it had never seen salt water. If your in QLD, all the trucks end up on the beach. So it may prove difficult.

Moparman is right, some 4wds are POS, but I've seen some early hj45 diesels that are cheap that are real gems. This is because they are not a luxury mobile, but a Truck.

In Victoria and NSW, I'd say you could pretty much drive anything. After that I stick to my original post. TOYOTA. The other thing you see are Suzuki Sierras. They will go anywhere, but dislodging a kidney is a real possibility. On the plus side you could fit a 4k for that 'rolla feeling. :)

try this also
