Trev Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 After the conversation about oil thickness in this thread: http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?showtopic=44395 and people saying that my info about gear oil being thicker then engine oil I thought I would do a comparison vid to show some actual facts. Test was done with: On the left is HPR30 extra 10 20-60w (enigne). On the right is Nulon lim slip SAE 90. (gearbox). as shown in this pic: and now in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygnMtxJpb8U you can clearly see the engine oil running before the gearbox oil. discuss... Quote
irokin Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 And again at operating temperature? Edit: I'm not fighting for either side, just interested. Quote
Trev Posted August 27, 2010 Author Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) What for? I think I made my point. EDIT: ok, that will be hard for me to do at the moment and we were referring to oil out of the bottle. Edited August 27, 2010 by Trev Quote
Evan G Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 red oil is the engine oil? who the heck makes red engine oil? so the gearbox oil was thicker than the engine oil cause it was the slower one to run down? Quote

Yes and if you think it is auto fluid then I will do another test tomorrow using another brand of oil. Quote
GJM85 Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Well it's common knowledge that liquid thins out at high teperatures.... the test would there for become, which oil thins out the most, at the average temperature. If you heated both oils to a constant 85C I would bet the 20-60 engine oil is still thinner.... I'm using the same penrite in my engine assembly process. Quote

ke70dave Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 few factors that you havent controlled there trev. how do you know you have exactly the same amount of each oil? looks to me like you may have just had more red stuff on that paint tin lid, thus it appeared my viscous. or less viscous...i can never remember which way it is....more runnier? a better way would be to put the oil in a thin tube, and drop something like a marble into it, and time how long it takes to get to the bottom of the tube. GJM85 Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 comparing gear oil and engine oil is equivelant to comparing peaches and potatoes.... Quote

When I measured it out in a cap (not sure of capacity but did it so same level) and poured it on the lid the engine oil spread out whereas the diff oil stayed together and formed a bulge. Quote
Felix Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 comparing gear oil and engine oil is equivelant to comparing peaches and potatoes.... Yea who gives a f@$k. One you put in your engine, one you put in your gearbox/diff. Quote
