A few other brands make adjustable shocks too, I think even KYB do. But yes, whichever brand you decide to go with, prepare to pay dollars. My front shocks (Koni) were $500 for the pair, and are only rebound adjustable.

i have tried koni and Bilstein but they don't list them for that model car. i just need to know if anyone has come accross something that fits in. datsun 1600? commodore? or maybe i'd be better off removing the extra leafs and just going with a stiffer shock?

I've added 2 extra leafs to my leaf pack (KE35). I'm running KYB's on the back, and they're doing fine. In my old KE55 I had stock springs, running Monroe gas shocks, and they went fine. Are you sure your shocks aren't flogged out? I've always found the KYB's to be heavier valved than most others, and last a lot longer. My Monroes lasted about 3 months before they started to feel a bit soft'ish.

I'm surprised Koni don't list anything for a KE35/55?

I think there is a Commodore shock that fits in that's valved a bit heavier, I can never remember. And I think there's a Torana one or something that does too. I asked somewhere (probably on these forums) ages ago, but I've since forgotten.

HK Holden (Monaro) are a bolt in fit in a KE35 and I think early Commodore Wagon are the same. Don't know if they are available as adjustables though
