Tuning 4K Carbies?

xris

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys.

My carby was filthy so we pulled it apart and cleaned it. now the secondaries actually spray fuel. but I'm still having issues with it not idling or idling too high. was wondering if theres any specialists out there that knows to to set up these 4k carbies? or just any carbie joint will do?

It also hesitates when you go to take off as well (pulls nicely till the redline but idle and take off are crap(or if you mash your foot it just splutters).

cheers

Can't help with the idling problem (other than to check all the emissions gear is plugged in correctly and timing/points etc are set properly).

The spluttering sounds like it could be the accelerator pump - I've had this problem before and a new one has always fixed it. Easy to change once you have the top of the carb off, carb removal not necessary. They come with carb rebuild kits, or if you're lucky someone might sell you just the pump.

Forgot to add you can check the operation of the fuel pump by checking for a squirt of fuel when you initially open the throttle with a fast action (ie like what happens when you mash you foot into the go pedal). It should be easily visible if working.

Old plungers were leather and the newer ones are soft rubber/plastic from what i gather, but I could be wrong and I'm not sure which one is preferrable performance or longevity wise (I always liked the leather ones better myself).

Cars using abit too much fuel as well (so I'm guessing rich) 175km to half a tank.

Thornbury Carburettor Service

Peter is the man and is very good at what he does, the carbie on my ae71 needed the idle lowered as it converted from auto. Secondly the auto choke had to be tinkered/played with as it was seized and laslty the mixuted were way off in a very bad way.

He had the car for 24 hrs and quoted me $175.00 for the job and the car is much nicer to drive. A drive from Greensborough to Heathcote then back home consisted of 330kms to 1/2 a tank, or like low 6l/100km.

Thronbury guy is up his eyeballs in bench jobs, thats what I was told in early november. Ans was politely asked by his wife I'm assuming can I wait a little longer till early dec? So I said yes and it was worth it.

i rang that guy 12 times in one day? uhhh

just do what I'm doing. buy a $130 o2 gauge. $20 for a o2 bung and $20 to get it welded up.

monitor the air fuel gauge. play with jets till you get it perfect!

I'm pretty sure we got my SUs rebuilt by South East carbies in Dandenong, they were great at managing to fit it in so we could get the car on the road.

We had the wrong needles though, so I took it to Powerplay Automotive in Mentone (or Chetenham, somewhere in that area) and they dyno tuned it, found the right needles and fixed some other little problems, when it drove out it was basically a different car.

All this was about 3-5 years ago though so I don't know who's still kicking around these days.
