ke70dave Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 hmmm doesnt surprise me. the porshe example is interseting, cheaper to move to america for 12months, buy a porsche, drive it around america for a while. then bring it over when you return to aus. than to buy one out right in aus.....crazy. 7shades Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 Here's another example... If you were buying a brand new large family sedan, and the following four candidates were all similarly priced: Holden Commodore Ford Falcon BMW 5 series Mercedes Benz E class What would you choose? After driving them all, I'd wager it wouldn't be either of the first two. The ONLY reason European cars cost so damn much in this country is because the government taxes the absolute shit out of them... Justifying its actions by classifying them as 'Luxury' cars. Well shit, they aren't luxury in Europe, they use them as taxis FFS. Compared to our locally produced substandard dreck, then yeah, they're luxurious. What's that tell you. They make them expensive, because if the playing field were EQUAL... Nobody would buy the crap we trundle out of the factory... Not even out of some misguided sense of patriotism. Quote
Des Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 That reminds me Mr shady, That BMW is now $1200 as is. The one i rang you at 5am to tell you about ? I'd like a 5 series BMW. Quote

I own one of the top two there, can't say which since I work for the company that makes them. I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER buy one again!! Biggest piece of shit I have ever owned - even the fact it was cheap does not take the bad taste away every time I drive it :blinks: Quote

philbey Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 I own one of the top two there, can't say which since I work for the company that makes them. do Ford have a factory in adelaide? I'm glad the second article picked up on this point. "...good cars sell well, regardless of where they are made" Japan, Korea and before you know it China, are building better nicer cleaner smoother to drive cars that last much longer than what we can build here in australia. The sentimental car buyers market has propped up the floundering auto industry in this country for too long. Quote
Des Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Id buy a I30 over say a fiesta or cruze. The thing i like about my falcon is they were used as taxi's so there is ALOT in the wrecking yards so cheap parts but a Cressida has more luxury bits and is 10 years older. Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 South Africa makes BMWs and Mercs, and I was stunned at how cheap they were when I arrived over there. Subsidising those few thousand unionists employed in Victoria is a very costly business for eveyone else in Aussie. The sooner they face facts and realise Aussie can't make cars competitively the sooner we will all get cheaper cars. The best thing that every happened in NZ was letting in the Jap imports, and I reckon more people are involved in the motor industry now than there used to be. It was so strange to come over to Aussie and find so many old cars on the roads, so few (and boring!) models to pick from, and they were all soooo expensive! Quote
