Corolla_Kid Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Gday guys. The other day ont he way home from work my clutch wasnt disengaging properly and thus it was quite difficult changing gears. Not what i wanted at the time as it was f###ing hot. Anyway i thought id fixed it by moving the circlip where the clutch goes through the firewall but that lasted a few days and the problem is back again. I have a 5k with a 5 speed gearbox out of a ke 70. I was just wondering if you guys could shed any liight on the topic as it is really pissing me off. I've checked every point along the cables travel and ive since deduced that it must be somthing wrong internally. Also the problem seems intermittent and only plays up when i exceed 3500 rpm which with 4.1:1 diff is quite often. After i exceed this engine speed it wont stop playing up till i stop and let it sit for a while. Also there is a small amount of oil leaking from the back of the engine and from the boot where the clutch lever enters the gearbox. Any help would be appreciated. Quote
Super Jamie Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 oil leaking onto the clutch? that's generally not good. perhaps it's time to change your rear main seal the circlip is supposed to be 5 deviations from the firewall. a deviation is a part of the adjustment that either goes up or down, so one channel is 2 deviations (as it goes down-up like this ¯|_|¯) Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted October 6, 2005 Author Report Posted October 6, 2005 yeah i know that is why i thought something worse must be wrong so the gear box is coming out this weekend Quote
Felix Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 could even be the front gearbox seal. a bit more of a pain to renew. Quote
Super Jamie Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 if you need a new clutch cable let me know, the one from my ke25 is genuine toyota ($120) and only a few months old Quote
Medicine_Man Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 I know my rear main seal used to leak like a bitch, put a new one in and its not as bad as it used to be.. (did it when i had my engine pulled down to fix other oil leaks).. Quote
DyNo Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Strange sounding problem you have there , first things first though if you don't get onto the rear main seal it wont be long before you wont have a clutch to worry about anymore. Now you say that your cable is'nt the problem , well without wanting to sound too cocky i would be replacing it... They can seem perfect out of the car when running freely , but when you start loading them up in the car it can be a whole differant story. It just seems strange , the intermittant deal is the bit that rattles me , but still id be replaceing the rear main and cable , id be fairly sure that the cable is your enemy here. Cheers , DyNo. Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted October 6, 2005 Author Report Posted October 6, 2005 Yeah the only reason I'm not thinking its the cable is that the whole engine and gearbox were only put in the car in may and the clutch cable was new then so i presumed its still ok. Thanks for the advice. Quote
ancullen Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 I've been having the same problem (except with an A-series motor and T50). We've pulled the clutch out and discovered that the clutch plate is slightly flexed and we're pretty certain this is what has been causing the problem. I'm getting myself and new clutch kit and we'll see if that helps (it'd bloody better). Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted October 8, 2005 Author Report Posted October 8, 2005 Well today was interesting. I put the beast up and pulled the gearbox out and i found the problem. For one the entire bellhousing was full of engine oil which was all over the clutch plates but that wasn't the problem (i think). There was that much gunk and sand and just crap in the pressure plate that it had seized. As i took the beast for a bit of a rally one day a lot of shit has got in through the hole where the gearbox and engine join and then mixed with the oil leaking out of the rear main seal and has made a mess. Red's sig is so true bout the massive bills for rallying. I also popped a tyre in the same day so I'm regretting it so much now. Tomorrow I'm going in to repco to order a clutch kit and rear main seal and hopefully it will be back on the road soon. Quote
Felix Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 have you got an engine flex plate with an open hole in the front of it? dirt really shouldn't be able to get in there easily. Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted October 8, 2005 Author Report Posted October 8, 2005 Yeah that is getting plugged before it all goes back together to prevent this happening again. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 The biggest problem I had with my clutch with the oil over it was when I was coming home one afternoon in a cracker storm. Water must have been flowing in through the clutch fork hole and oil/water = instant no clutch. (extremely fun on the highyway (110km/hr zone) in peak hour traffic, thunder and lightning, stuck on the inside of the highway for a few hours.. limped it across the other side of the road as soon as i got a good enough gap in the traffic and towed it home. 4th gear had screwed itself earlier in the week so I decided to replace the box and clutch at the same time. Corolla_Kid Posted October 8, 2005 Author Report Posted October 8, 2005 (edited) Lucky were in a drought at the moment otherwise id have the same problem. Edited October 8, 2005 by Corolla_Kid Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted October 10, 2005 Author Report Posted October 10, 2005 Alright guys ive got another question. Is the 4k, 5k clutch the same unit? and does anyone have the repco part no. as my local repco is a bit retarded and ordered me the wrong one. Quote
