Hey

Today, I just felt like doing something apart from body work so I thought I'd just have a little look inside the engine. Now, I used a 14mm socket wrench and it was going well with the rocker cover bolts and then I got a few bolts in and just kept slipping off. It appears the bolt is 'stripped' and 2 others also. Any ideas on what to do? People before hand had fun with it by the looks of them.

Which bolts are you referring too? Manifold Bolts? Head Bolts?

Are you still trying to get the bolts out, or put them back in?

 

Is it just the head of the bolt that is stripped off or the thread? (if its the head of the bolt, i assume your referring to the manifold bolts).

I'm just referring the bolts on top of the engine. lol, they're really long and have thread at the bottom. Any help? I suck at explaining things.

well, if you want some help, it's time to either learn what parts are, or take photos and use paint to draw red arrows on them. we're not mind readers

Biatches, lol. Alrighty, you're standing looking at the engine bay. You look at the rocker cover and then to the right and theres a row of bolts, those are the ones I'm talking about. The go all the way through to the head. better?

the manifold bolts?

 

if so you will probably need to pull the head off, get it helicoiled and install studs.

Either that, or he actually means the Head Bolts themselves.......???

If we are talking about a K engine here then ther are only 2 bolts that hold the rocker cover on, at least in my very limited experience, and they are only 10 or 12 mill in size. Then there a number of bolts under the rocker cover that you need to remove to take the head off, again only 12 mill in size.

 

The 14 mill bolts you are undoing don't need to be undone to take off the rocker cover or the head.

 

 

Of course I could be completely wrong but thats the impression that it get.

the rocker cover dome nuts are 14mm, as are the manifold bolts and head bolts.

rocker pedestal ones are 12mm.

 

i can't really see the head bolts being stripped, as they thread into a cast iron block. maybe the heads rounded off on them.

 

the manifold bolts, yes. not to hard to strip them, as they thread into the soft alloy of the head. these bolts get a lot of work compared to headbolts.

 

the rocker pedestal bolts could be easily stripped, by some heavy handed thug with no torque wrench or brain.

yeah i'm pretty sure hes talking about the head bolts....

yea, sorta thinking he means rounding the heads off the head bolts now i have reread it a few times.

easy way to solve this. the rocker cover bolts are vertical, the bolts you're talking about run horizontally, right?

 

if so, they're the manifold bolts. and like doug said, you just need to take the head off, take it into an engine builders and get them to helicoil the threads you've stripped

 

a head gasket isn't hard, but it's not exactly a small job either, you're going to need a torque wrench and a workshop manual, and feeler gauges and some idea of how to set tappets. if you don't understand any of that, take it to a mechanic

 

if the bolts you're talking about are vertical, and are indeed head bolts, then you're probably easier to just throw the engine away and get one from the paper or a forum or the wreckers

 

if you've stripped a vertical bolt, but one of the ones that hold the rockers down, then that's no big deal, proceed as if you've stripped a manifold bolt. my good head has ALL helicoils holding in the rocker covers. one doesn't even line up, so it doesn't have a bolt in it

Hahahaha. Alright these are vertical so I'm assuming I'll just have to find a new 4k. They aren't the manifold bolts, sorry I have a bad habit of speaking before I think. They're the head bolts after further inspection, and thinking. My bad, noob mistake. Hope we can all make up and get along :unsure: Thanks for the help, so New 4k is the go ey?

Have you stripped the thread or rounded the bolts???

 

If you rounded it weld on another bolt to get that one out, then put a new bolt on...

you can still buy new head bolts from toyota spare parts too
