It'll get there. :P

Did some fiddling about with some spare gearboxes today, you might recall a few pages back I attempted to get a C52 into Blue Thing to replace the C40. That gearbox had issues, so back out it came, but I did discover that the C40 output shafts (small bits straight out of the gearbox) fit into the C52.

So I dug out the gearbox I got as a spare when I bought my original AE82, from what I know it's from a 20v ST from an AE101 so likely a C56. As the output shafts from the C52 fit into it, I'm fairly confident I can use the C40 output shafts & driveshafts. Almost an insult putting it behind an 8v engine.

I did need to swap over the switches for the reverse lights, they're the same device just different plugs for the wiring loom. Also, the speedometer sensors are different in that the C52 item is a cable drive & the C56 is an electronic item. The gears on them have the same markings (35/31) & the same number of teeth, thinking that swapping them over shouldn't hold any problems. Will compare them to the C40 item & check speedo accuracy with GPS afterwards.

While I'm here, upgraded the shagged rubber bushes on the shifter cables to something a little firmer.

It turns out the swap wasn't as easy as I'd hoped for (when is it ever?), not only did I have a locating pin from the block meeting up with a corresponding one in the gearbox to deal with (a BIG hammer & a punch says fixed), I found out the brackets for the engine mounts on the front/back/passenger side of the gearbox are ever so slightly different. Unfortunately this was as I was trying to get the crossmember back in, not only do they not line up at all, the bolts for the mounts don't fit through the brackets. Cue epic rage fit & rapid swapping over of the brackets. The C56 also has an extra 'rib' underneath the passenger side driveshaft, meaning that getting the driveshaft in is not as easy as it once was. Also managed to cross-thread a crossmember bolt for about the third time, so I tapped a coarser thread & put a new HT bolt in.

C40 out.

4 speed to the right, 5 speed to the left.

Extra washers required for shifter cable bush replacement.

Took it for a short test drive, second gear is a little crunchy if I try to rush shifting into it, but it could be that I'm used to a sloppy four-speed. I'll wait until I've driven it a bit more before I write off the synchros. RPM at 100km/h with the four speed was ~3600rpm in fourth. With the 5 speed it's now ~3200rpm in fifth. It's only ~400rpm I know, but it makes a big difference to noise levels, maybe fuel economy will get a little kick too.

Its a touch too heavy, and Penrite doesnt make the best oils to say the least...

Try going to western oil in sunshine and ask for 5L of Syngear 75w-90. Ive never had any issues with gearboxes since!

Other than that, how does it feel? does it go any harder?

I had a c52 on my 3ETE, those gearboxes get around!

Turn your photo's Luke! you're doing my head in.

The good old C-series gearboxes, one of the dirty tramps of the automotive world. Wikipedia isn't entirely accurate of course, but it surprised me how many vehicles this gearbox series can be found in worldwide.

Photo's are fixed. :P

It's what I had available sitting in the shed (from the '82 with a C50), one of the objectives of the 5 speed swap was to not spend any money doing it. Objective complete. :D

Care to elaborate on/explain the Penrite comment? No offence taken, just curious.

I might put the rubber bushes for the shifter cables back in to allow some 'give' for the rusty 5 speed operator, then put the bearings in once I've adjusted to it. Other than shifting into second it's smooth & quiet, BT certainly doesn't feel lightning quick due to it but it also doesn't feel like she's fighting against a slightly too tall a gear ratio anymore. For instance: Second gear with the C40 would make the engine 'lug' in the lower speed stuff where first would be revving its nut off. Second gear now has some pull in the lower rpm, same with third. I dare say it's no faster in terms of acceleration, it just feels smoother, like it actually WANTS to increase speed. :blinks:

Having said that, a 4A would also cure that...
